More people spent their holidays in the Algarve this January

The largest hotel association in southern Portugal announced that January’s average occupancy rate in the Algarve, the most famous destination for golf holidays in Portugal, was 36.9 percent, the highest percentage in that month of the past 20 years.

The first data on the monthly development of activity in the sector was provided by the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), and the number of this year is close to the percentages obtained in 2000 (40.3 percent) and 2001 (37.5 percent).

Room occupancy in January 2023 was 3.8 percentage points higher than in January 2019 (the year before the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic) and 2.6 percentage points higher than in January 2020. (one month before the start of the pandemic).

The average number of guests staying in a hotel in the Algarve in January this year was 11.7 percent more than in January 2022.

The association claims that the growth was driven mostly by the Irish (+1.0 pp) and British (+0.4 pp) markets. Meanwhile, AHETA notes that the markets in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Canada all had “significant gains” compared to 2019.

Tavira (+18 pp), Faro (+13.2 pp), and Vilamoura/Quinta do Lago (+11.5 pp) saw the greatest gains compared to 2019.

The Algarve has some of the best golf courses in Europe, like Monte Rei (considered the best in Portugal) and Quinta do Lago South. Last year, 5 golf courses in the region have been placed among Europe’s top 100, which proves the excellence of the Algarve.

The famous magazine Lonely Planet has placed the Western Algarve, Madeira and Azores among the best for spring breaks in Europe. Consider these regions for your next golf holidays.

At the Western Algarve, part of the most famous Portuguese destination for golf holidays, Lonely Planet recommends the whitewashed little towns, the stunning beaches, the fabulous Cabo de São Vicente, and the natural park of Costa Vicentina on the west coast of the region. The Western Algarve has brilliant golf courses, some of the best in Europe, like Palmares in Portimão and Boavista in Lagos. Challenging but marvellous golf rounds are waiting for you in the Algarve.

Of the Azores, the magazine highlights the island of São Miguel, the biggest of the archipelago. Lonely Planet describes the Azores as stepping stones over the mid-Atlantic that resemble a lost planet with their jagged cliffs, waterfalls, and crystalline lakes. In São Miguel, it is suggested the geothermal marvels of Furnas, the Terra Nostra botanical gardens, and the Sete Cidades lagoon, known as the main natural attraction of the Azores. Despite the small size, the Azores have wonderful golf courses, with Batalha being often considered the best.

Lonely Planet calls Madeira the ‘island of the eternal spring’ and describes the island as a botanist’s fantasy. The magazine’s recommendations are a delicious wine tasting in Funchal, the wonderful Botanical Gardens of Madeira, the Cabo Girão and the traditional toboggan rides on Madeira’s steep streets. Amendoeira Golf Resort is, for the sixth time, hosting the Oceânico Kids World Golf Championship. The championship, regularly attracting entries from as far afield as Asia, is held over 4 days and will be contested over three rounds of the Oceânico Faldo Course and O’Connor Jnr course. Along with a Child & Parent tournament on the Oceanico Academy 9-hole par 3 course.
For golfers and golfing-spectators on holiday in Portugal, the Oceânico Kids World Golf Championship provides the opportunity to enjoy the golfing talent of some of the up-and-coming young golfers from across the world. As they compete on two championship golf courses.
