Portugal Golf Holidays – Three Portuguese destinations among the best in Europe for spring breaks

Praia da Marinha. Three Portuguese regions regarded as ideal for spring breaks

Three Portuguese destinations for spring breaks

The famous magazine Lonely Planet has placed the Western Algarve, Madeira and Azores among the best for spring breaks in Europe. Consider these regions for your next golf holidays.

At the Western Algarve, part of the most famous Portuguese destination for golf holidays, Lonely Planet recommends the whitewashed little towns, the stunning beaches, the fabulous Cabo de São Vicente, and the natural park of Costa Vicentina on the west coast of the region. The Western Algarve has brilliant golf courses, some of the best in Europe, like Palmares in Portimão and Boavista in Lagos. Challenging but marvellous golf rounds are waiting for you in the Algarve.

Of the Azores, the magazine highlights the island of São Miguel, the biggest of the archipelago. Lonely Planet describes the Azores as stepping stones over the mid-Atlantic that resemble a lost planet with their jagged cliffs, waterfalls, and crystalline lakes. In São Miguel, it is suggested the geothermal marvels of Furnas, the Terra Nostra botanical gardens, and the Sete Cidades lagoon, known as the main natural attraction of the Azores. Despite the small size, the Azores have wonderful golf courses, with Batalha being often considered the best.

Lonely Planet calls Madeira the ‘island of the eternal spring’ and describes the island as a botanist’s fantasy. The magazine’s recommendations are a delicious wine tasting in Funchal, the wonderful Botanical Gardens of Madeira, the Cabo Girão and the traditional toboggan rides on Madeira’s steep streets. Madeira has dazzling golf courses like Santo da Serra that are ready to give you a great holiday experience.

Spain Golf – Isla Canela Old Golf Course installed photovoltaic panels for self-consumption

Isla Canela Old wants energy independence

Isla Canela Golf’s photovoltaic enclosure on the Isla Canela Old course has been recently installed and turned on. Located in the out rough area of the golf course, the installation has a total surface area of around 1500 square metres and has been used as part of a larger effort to reduce the irrigated area and make better use of water.

The Isla Canela Golf Hotel, the clubhouse, and the golf course’s irrigation water pumping system will all be able to utilise electricity from the solar array, which includes a compensation mechanism for energy that is not self-consumed.

The owners of Isla Canela Golf are hoping to further advance energy transition initiatives and implement steps from its Strategic Plan for Social and Environmental Sustainability in accordance with the sustainable development goals set forth by the United Nations.

Isla Canela may now reduce its CO2 output thanks to this new installation. The owners have been calculating the company’s carbon impact since 2019, and this action will help them get closer to their decarbonization target.

Isla Canela is located in a truly unique place on the Costa de la Luz region, near Huelva, right next to the border with Portugal, and it is one of the most popular golf holiday destinations in the region.

Finca Cortesin Golf. Solheim Cup joins Costa del Sol Zero Footprint project

The Solheim Cup aims to be more sustainable

To enhance its goal of being an environmentally friendly event, the Solheim Cup 2023, a women’s golf competition pitting Europe against the United States from September 18 to 24 at Finca Cortesin golf course, in Malaga, has adopted a new set of sustainability standards. Being hosted on the Costa del Sol, the Solheim Cup 2023 became involved with the “Costa del Sol Zero Footprint” initiative.

Costa del Sol is now the first tourist destination in the world to measure and compensate for the carbon footprint of every visitor, regardless of the nature of their journey. Your golf holidays in Costa del Sol will be, from now on, more sustainable than ever.

As Francisco Salado, president of both institutions, says: “The Costa del Sol is once again a pioneer and becomes a benchmark with a project that Turismo Costa del Sol has been working on for some time and which is another example of the clear commitment that both the Malaga Provincial Council and Turismo Costa del Sol make for the sustainability of this popular golf holiday destination”.

“As an added bonus, sustainability is one of the most telling metrics of a place’s overall appeal, popularity, and reputation. The Costa del Sol, however, is well aware that it must play in that league or risk being left behind. Because we believe that responsible tourist development must serve as the central tenet of the Costa del Sol’s future success”, he continues.

Tourists who visit the Costa del Sol, whether to play in the region’s stunning golf courses or not, can participate in the initiative by visiting the project website, entering the details of their trip, and getting the result of their carbon footprint in kilogrammes of CO2 and its equivalent in trees planted.

Throughout collaboration with another initiative, the “Málaga Viva”, over 340.000 trees have been planted in the province and land banks are being established to reforest and offset the carbon impact.
