Tee Times Spain Golf – PGA Catalunya Resort Candidate to Host the 2022 Ryder Cup

PGA Catalunya Resort has been appointed as candidate venue for Spain’s Bid to host The 2022 Ryder Cup.

The announcement was made this week by the Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG), which is leading the Official Bid in partnership with the national government of Spain and key stakeholders in Catalunya.

Spain is one of six countries bidding to host The 2022 Ryder Cup, so there is strong competition. However, PGA Catalunya Resort has experience of staging European Tour events, including the Open De España in 2000, 2009 and 2014, as well as The Qualifying School Final Stage for the past seven consecutive years, we feel Spain’s entry, with PGA Catalunya Resort as its preferred venue, makes a compelling Bid.

The Ryder Cup is one of the world’s greatest sporting events. The 2014 match between Europe and the United States was broadcast on television in more than 180 territories, attracting a global audience of more than 544 million households.

More than 250,000 spectators attended this year’s match at Gleneagles, Scotland, including fans from 96 different countries. Of course, with a global event of this size there is the potential for significant economic benefits for the host country and region, not to mention the venue itself.

PGA Catalunya Resort location next to the cities of Barcelona and Girona, with their international airports and highspeed rail connectivity, as well as the world-class cuisine and hospitality of the region, should stand in favour.

Staging The Ryder Cup at PGA Catalunya Resort would be hugely significant. As you know, the Stadium Course was originally developed with a view to hosting a major event such as The Ryder Cup, so it would be the realisation of a vision should the Bid be successful.

PGA Catalunya Resort proprietor, Denis O’Brien, is fully committed to Spain’s Bid and will continue to invest in PGA Catalunya Resort, further developing the leisure, hospitality and residential offering that has already made this a world-class golf venue and an award-winning real estate development.

These are exciting times at PGA Catalunya Resort. Its position as a leading destination within the global golf arena has been further reinforced by our latest accolades, which include being voted European Golf Resort of the Year 2015 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) and receiving the title of Spain’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards and the accolade for Best Golf Development Europe at the Europe Property Awards.

To be selected as Spain’s candidate venue for The 2022 Ryder Cup is a momentous decision and the opportunity to host one of the world’s greatest sporting events is both a mark of how far we have come and where we plan to be in the near future.

Tee Times Spain Golf: PGA Catalunya Resort hosts European Tour Qualifying School

The PGA Catalunya Resort recently held the final stage for the PGA Qualifying School, on its golf courses the Catalunya PGA Stadium GC and the Catalunya PGA Tour GC, on the 15th November to 20th November.

Four Spanish golfers – Adrian Otaegui, Eduardo de la Riva, Pedro Oriol and Borja Virto – have successfully passed the final qualifying school on the Male European Tour PGA at the Catalunya Resort, obtaining the card to dispute the maximum continental circuit in 2015.

The Catalunya PGA Stadium is a spectacular and imposing course that has been consistently ranked among the best ten golf courses in Europe since it was opened in 1999 and was recently voted #77 in the world, #3 in continental Europe and #1 in Spain. As the venue for numerous PGA European Circuit tournaments, it is also routinely singled out for praise from the professional playing fraternity.

Be warned, however the beauty of the course can distract from the many dangers waiting to do serious damage to your scorecard. It makes no concessions with its trees pressing onto fairways, strategically placed bunkers and the lakes that come into play on no fewer than seven of the toughest holes.

This is a quality that keeps players returning time and again to test themselves. It is rare to find so many memorable holes on one course and despite the many ups and downs, tees are elevated and very few fairways are uphill. The stunning dogleg of hole 6 is one of them and it demands nothing less than a driver and total commitment.

For a slightly less stern challenge, turn to the equally beautiful but kinder Catalunya PGA Tour Course. Dominated by pine trees and lakes, the course is shorter and a little less difficult to play than the Stadium Course, yet the Ángel Gallardo and Neil Coles design ensures that it remains a challenge for every level of player.

Most of the holes feature wide fairways and strategically placed bunkers, which can be forgiving of a less than perfect shot. Another feature sure to focus the mind is that it seems you are never far from a water hazard.
There is no question that the Tour Course is a worthy challenge. The prestige of this remarkable Golf course was born through its status as co-host of the European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage since 2008.

The PGA Catalunya Resort was recently voted European Golf Resort of the Year 2015 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

The award, which comes as PGA Catalunya Resort celebrates the 15th anniversary of its Stadium Course, is the 20th significant accolade the European Tour Destination has received since it opened to the public in 1999.
