The golf courses of Huelva highlight a “good summer” and are “optimistic” about the autumn season

The Huelva Golf Courses Association has stressed that this summer season 2021 “has been good” for them, due to the arrival of the national golfer, and has been “optimistic” for the autumn season because “it seems to be confirmed that almost all markets will begin to issue players.

This has indicated its president, Tino Cordero, who explained that the autumn of 2020 practically no international tourists arrived due to the pandemic of covid-19 and that, as it has been developing this year, they did not expect to have them for 2021, but that with the vaccination “the situation may change”.

In this sense, he pointed out that the “problem” comes from the United Kingdom, as with the restrictions they currently have, he believes it is “complicated” for travel agents to “start sending people out of their country”, as he pointed out that the rest of the European markets “are starting to work” and that this week they have already noticed “an increase in players”, as well as the hotels “changing from national to international tourists”.

Despite this, he stressed that they do not expect to have “pre-pandemic data”, although he was “happy” that the sector “can work”. On this point, he recalled that last summer the ERTEs were still in force and “some of the courses were closed, cutting the work dynamic that began after the confinement”, while this year “the idea is to keep the hotels open, especially the golf hotels” and “try to be open all year round and not close in December”.

After indicating that the “strong” season is the months of October and November, he pointed out that “when you really register occupancy that can be considered high season is during the month of October”, which is usually around 60-70% occupancy, while November is considered “mid-season” because “the days are shorter”, as well as “there are not so many people travelling” during that month. He also added that December and January are “quieter” months.

With regard to UK tourists, Cordero said that “their absence is noticeable”, because although the golf destination of Huelva is “well established in Scandinavia and Holland”, among other countries, the main market, “especially the larger hotels that operate much larger operations, not only in golf, but others who also send many golfers to the courses, if they are going to notice the lack of the UK”, because it is “the first country of origin to Faro”.

For this reason, he stressed that if this market were reactivated and they had “some demand” from tourists “an increase would be noticed, especially in the large hotels”. In this sense, he pointed out that the courses that remained open last year did so “above all to serve national and local clients”, but “not because there was business, but because it was a commitment by the owners of the golf courses”, despite being “a very bad and loss-making year”.

He stressed that this year “the scheme is different” and that they will try to “save the season and make it better than last year”, while expressing his desire to “get back to normal”. “This will be a year of transit, but we hope to be preparing for 2022 when we can return to real numbers”.

The province of Huelva has seven golf courses, two in Ayamonte –Isla Canela and Valle Guadiana Links-, one in Islantilla, two in Cartaya -El Rompido and the Nuevo Portil Golf course– and two in Aljaraque, one in Bellavista and the other in La Monacilla.

Empordà Golf will host the Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava of the European Challenge Tour next October

The European Challenge Tour announced today that two events in Spain, the Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava, will take place in consecutive weeks at Empordà Golf this October.

The Empordà Challenge will be held from 14th to 17th October, while the Challenge Costa Brava will take place from Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd October. The latter will mark the end of the regular season of the Road to Mallorca, determining the field of forty-five players for the Grand Final of the Rolex Challenge Tour sponsored by The R&A from 4 to 7 November.

Empordà Golf Course is the former venue for the European Tour and European Tour Qualifying School events, and the two Challenge Tour tournaments will be played on the Links Course, which underwent major renovation works during 2020. These two back-to-back events replace the Hainan Open and Foshan Open in China, which were cancelled earlier this month due to the continuing effects of the global pandemic.

“We thank Empordà Golf and the promoter, JGolf, for their help in bringing these events to fruition. It was important to us to provide our members with these replacement tournaments to ensure that playing opportunities were maximised at an important time of the season and, having enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Javier Gervás and his team, we knew it would be possible to organise a solution with their help,” said Jamie Hodges, head of Challenge Tour.

“Empordà Golf has stood the test of time in terms of hosting professional events and we are excited to spend two weeks in Spain at such a wonderful venue,” adds Hodges.

“When the slot on the Road to Mallorca calendar came up, we worked hard to help cover those crucial two weeks on the calendar. We knew that Empordà Golf was keen to go one step further in terms of the professional tournaments it has hosted and so we set out to host the last two Challenge Tour tournaments before the Grand Final,” explains Javier Gervás, general manager of JGolf.

“They have made a great effort and I am sure they will be rewarded. We are now going to have two decisive tournaments in Spain this season with international coverage that will put Empordà Golf in the world golfing spotlight,” adds Gervás.

“The decision to hold the Empordà Challenge confirms the efforts being made by all the clubs on the Costa Brava to improve their facilities and become a world-class sports destination,” says Emilio Cuatrecasas, President of Empordà Golf Club.

“It is also worth noting that the growing popularity of these international tournaments is driving many young people to play golf, and the clubs are feeding not only their energy but also an updated vision of the sport that will bring considerable progress in the sporting, social and environmental fields,” adds Cuatrecasas.

The Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava will be the second Spanish swing of the Road to Mallorca 2021 after the Challenge de España and the Challenge de Cádiz, held at the Real Club de Golf Novo Sancti Petri last June.

The Empordà Challenge and the Challenge Costa Brava will be supported by the Challenge Tour, Empordà Golf, Girona Provincial Council through the Costa Brava Tourist Board, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and Kyocera. The promoter and organiser is JGolf.

Alcaidesa Links Golf Course welcomed the Sotogrande Golf Challenge on 10th July.

After the first day, on June 26th at La Reserva Club Golf Course, the great showcase of golf continues with the Sotogrande Golf Challenge circuit at Heathland golf course of Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort.

It is the first time in history that the seven golf courses from São Roque have come together in a tournament to host the inaugural edition of a circuit that promises great emotions and spectacular golf courses available to everyone and with the presence of a large number of national and international golfers.

The Heathland golf course of Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort’s was the chosen golf course for the more than sixty participants to try to give their best swing with the clear objective of qualifying for the Grand Final that will take place at Real Club Valderrama golf course on November 11th.

Alcaidesa Heathland golf course is an 18-hole, par 72 course designed by the prestigious former Ryder Cup player and author of several internationally renowned courses, Dave Thomas. This golf course offers a variety of natural landscapes ranging from a plateau area (holes 1 to 5, 17 and 18) where the golf course resembles a “moorland” type with wide fairways and exceptional views of the Mediterranean, to different mountains and to the valley area where the holes meander along with themselves and incorporate various water obstacles. The total course is 6,373 meters.

All participants will thus enjoy a golf course that combines exigency and fun in equal parts and in which they must show their best shots if they want to win in the handicap or scratch category, which gives them a direct pass to the Grand Final of Real Clube Valderrama.

But in the Sotogrande Golf Challenge consistency has its prize and the ranking of the regular phase starts to take shape. The top six handicap pairs and also the top six scratch pairs will also compete in the final at Real Club Valderrama.

The Sotogrande Golf Challenge does not stop in her calendar with several high-level competitions that are yet to be disputed. The renovated Old Golf Course at Clube São Roque will be the next after Alcaidesa Links golf course, on the 24th of July, where the 200 participants will have to do their best.

It will be the first tournament after a comprehensive redesign carried out in recent months. Mobile greens, wide fairways in a perfect condition worthy of the same European Tour, will be what the participants of this first edition of the Sotogrande Golf Challenge 2021 will find.

The deadline for participation has been extended, therefore, all interested parties are still in time to formalize the inscription in the different competitions that are still in dispute or opt to enrol together in the last three events to be held at Almenara Resort, La Cañada Golf Course and the Real Club de Sotogrande Golf Course at a very low price, starting at 250,00€. Registration is done through the website www.sotograndechallenge.com.

For Tee Times Golf Agency, this is another magnificent tournament held in the best and most competitive Spanish golf courses.
Alcaidesa Links golf course is a golfer’s paradise with the beauty of most of its holes located by the sea.
As well as the world-famous and appreciated San Roque Old & New golf courses.
The hotels, So / Sotogrande *****, Hotel Encinar de Sotogrande **** and Hotel Apartamentos Manilva Sun ***, complete the beauty of this Spanish region and guarantee the best golf break ever.
