La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links course re-opens on July 15

The former Alcaidesa, now known as La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, is rebranding itself as a premier 36-hole golf destination in southern Europe with the anticipated opening of its new Links golf course on Friday, July 15. The course was completely redesigned after a multimillion-dollar investment and will re-open with 36 holes.

La Hacienda's new layout will be introduced to golfers worldwide, marking a key step on the resort's path to becoming an upscale golf destination.

Located in San Roque, in the Spanish tourist region of Costa del Sol, the Links Course is considered one of the most exciting golf course projects in Europe and will run along the beachfront with spectacular views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar, and Africa.

In charge of the redesign and reconfiguration of the Alcaidesa Links golf course was Kurtis Bowman, an experienced course designer who sought to improve hole design, conditioning, and landscaping.

“A lot of work has gone into this project, both internally here at La Hacienda and through Kurtis Bowman and his team on the design, and we are very proud of the result. There is nothing like it in Spain and it will provide a unique and memorable experience for all players. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the south of Spain this summer”, says Javier Illán, the president of Millennium Hospitality.

In addition to the renewal of the golf course, a new contemporary clubhouse, driving range, and practice area were built prior to the creation of a five-star hotel with 150 rooms, a midway house with a restaurant, 51 luxury villas, and a beach club.

The new course maintenance equipment, a fleet of cutting-edge buggies, and operating software are all part of the effort to enhance the customer's experience.

La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf

The Links Course Opened in 1990 and designed by Peter Ellis and Clive Clark. The topography of the land, made of Alcaidesa gentle slopes that descend to the sea, ending in a beautiful beach, creates a front of nearly 2 km. Most of the holes are close to the beach. It has a 18-hole course that begins and ends at the new clubhouse. The difficulty of the course lies mainly in the condition of the prevailing winds of the place. One of the peculiarities of the field that most impresses the visitors, is its spectacular view over the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa. Total length is 5866 m

Excellent golf course. Breathtaking views will make you feel good even if you have a bad shot. Wide, forgiving fairways, perfect but difficult greens. Everything you can get from good golf round. Recommend to everyone.

Firstly, absolutely no problem with checkung in at the pro shop. They were aware of our booking through tee times.pt. The course itself is in good condition overall. The greens are in excellent condition, a few had been aerated recently but maintenance has to be done, the bunkers could do with more sand in then in our opinion, as in some cases they were very firm & impacted. From an aesthetic perspective, some of the holes are stunning.

What's new in Alcaidesa Links? Read the interview with the director of Golf Operations of La Hacienda Alcaidesa to European Tour Destinations

What’s the vision behind the new Links course at La Hacienda Alcaidesa?

The Links course is the signature course, so we decided last March that it needed a completely drastic redirection and we have redesigned it with the help of Curtis Bowman, an American golf designer, and if Alcaidesa was before a well-known place for the spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar, and more, we want to reposition ourselves, that’s why we rebranded, because we have new ownership. Our goal is to position ourselves with our nearest neighbors, like Valderrama or Sotogrande La Reserva, so we believe that if we push each other and create something special at the same level destination, we are all going to do better. We thought that we have something really special to tell, some really amazing story, that’s why we are upgrading the golf course.

What makes it a different proposition from other courses in Costa del Sol?

It’s a throwback to California’s Links courses, such as Pebble Beach and Cypress Point. In fact, we have already been called many times the Spanish Pebble Beach, because of the location, the lighthouse, and all of this. We have entirely done the tees, bunkers, greens, moved a lot of the terrain to expose the course to the Mediterranean Sea and make it look more natural, and people can expect a really challenging course, especially on the greens, with spectacular views, of course, they’ve been always there, and as I said, like a really new concept of golf course in the area, pretty much unique in the south of Spain.

What impact will the new hotel and off-course facilities have on the resort?

I think the hotel is going to play a big part in our success, because we are not just a golf course, we’re creating a whole new destination, and this level of service as well as on the golf course and the quality of it needs to be matched with some hospitality hotel of high-end options too, at least at the same level. We don’t have many options around the area, at this level at the moment, and our president is a good expert on operating high-level hotels, and I think this is going to play a big role, people will want to come and stay, experience what we provide, not just the hotel, but the restaurants, sports centers, spa, beach club, like we say in Spain, “chiringuito”, which is a beach restaurant, and I think this is going to push us really high, so, as soon as we have the hotel up and running, it’s going to make a big impact and a big difference, I believe.
