The Algarve region in Portugal has strengthened its commitment to engage with golfers across the spectrum by becoming ‘Official European Golf Destination’ of the 2015 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Trump Turnberry Resort, Scotland.

Following the success of the destination’s association with the Volvo World Match Play event last year, the Algarve will head to Scotland in July to showcase its unique attributes to a distinguished and knowledgeable audience, backed by a pre-event, multi-platform campaign.

This will include the opportunity for four lucky golfers to play the historic Trump Turnberry Ailsa golf course and offering 150 golf fans the chance to witness all the action of the prestigious event.

From July 30 – August 2, the illustrious competition will see some of the world’s finest lady golfers – including defending champion Mo Martin and Michelle Wie who won her first major at last year’s US Open – compete for the title.

A spokesperson for ATA said: “We are delighted to be the ‘Official European Golf Destination’ of the Ricoh Women’s British Open, and we look forward to a fantastic event at Trump Turnberry Resort at the end of July.

“We have a number of fun and interesting campaigns in store which we’re confident will get people really excited about golf in the Algarve.”

IMG Tournament Director Ross Hallett added: “We’re thrilled to once again work with the Algarve Tourism Board and welcome them as the ‘Official European Golf Destination’ for the 2015 Ricoh Women’s British Open.

“We believe that the Championship will provide a fantastic platform for them to showcase the best of the Algarve to a captivated golf audience.”

The Algarve’s sun-drenched climate boasts more than 300 days of sunshine per year, extending the golf season by several months and bringing players from all over the world to the region.

António Sobrinho Wins Optilink PGA Open

Tee Times Portugal Golf – António Sobrinho Wins Optilink PGA Open at Palmares, Lagos, Portugal.

António Sobrinho proved that at age 44, completed last March, can still tap his foot to the best and won the Optilink PGA Open, the second tournament of the PGA Tour Portugal 2015.

The tournament of 6000 euros in prize money was held in Alvor and Lagos routes of Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort in Lagos, Algarve.

The best Portuguese players were present, except for the injured Ricardo Santos and two residents abroad: Filipe Lima (France) and António Rosado (South Africa).

António Sobrinho, with the record of 11 titles of national champion, the last of which in 2008, totaled 139 strokes, 5 under par, with rounds of 74 and 65, and prevented the best ranked Portuguese in the world ranking, Ricardo Melo Gouveia, to add your 2nd consecutive trophy at the PGA Tour Portugal.

13 years ago, when António Sobrinho lived a memorable 2002 season in which he won almost all titles (failed only one) of the PGA Tour Portugal would not have been news his triumph in Palmares.

But at age 44, to be able to overcome opponents who are stars of the Challenge Tour, as Melo Gouveia and Figueiredo, both only 23 years old, and recognized national golf values, much younger, as Gonçalo Pinto, Hugo Santos, Miguel Gaspar and members of the amateur national team FPG, is not for everyone.

For many years nicknamed “The Portuguese Tiger Woods”, is the case to say that should change nickname for “The Portuguese Miguel Angel Jiménez”, alluding to the Spanish who, at 50, continues to be the best in the European Tour. The triumph in Onyria Palmares broke a double fast of three years of “left overs”.

His last title dated February 2012, a tournament played at Pestana Golf Resort’s Vale da Pinta, Carvoeiro, which included the Algarve Winter Tour, the international precursor circuit current Algarve Pro Golf Tour.

The next tournament on the PGA Tour Portugal 2015 will be the Liberty Seguros PGA Open, on 4th and 5th of June, also on the Palmares golf course.

Tee Times Portugal Golf – 2015 Madeira Islands Open – Started on 20th to 22nd March 2015

The Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal – got its start postponed to today, Friday the 20th, due to the strong wind that was felt in Santo da Serra Golf Club, in Machico, Madeira.

Santo da Serra Golf Club – Above the bay of Machico, where the first Portuguese sailors disembarked. Here, golf and nature live in perfect harmony with sport and the environment. Be it competition or pleasure, the passions of those who play at Santo da Serra are always satisfied. With the tournament reduced to 54 holes after strong winds prevented any play on Thursday, strong breezes again caused a delay on this morning with play starting one hour and 50 minutes later than planned.

Sweden’s Jacob Glennemo got play started at 9:40am, and with the first four groups having completed their opening hole, Javier Ballesteros – son of legendary five-time Major winner Seve – was the only player to have carded a birdie.

But it was Joachim B Hansen took the clubhouse lead during the first round of the Madeira Islands Open – BPI – Portugal with a four under par 68.

The 24 year old Dane, who lost his European Tour card last season after failing to register a top-ten finish, birdied two of his first three holes after starting on Santo da Serra Golf Club’s back nine.

This European Tour Professional Golf Tournament with 600.000, Euros in prize money was suspended from the start, and the decision to definitely postpone the opening day for today was communicated yeasterday at 2pm, by the race director, the Spanish Jose Maria Zamora.

“We had the misfortune of having presented a day with a lot of wind, with an average speed of 35/40 km/h and there were times with gusts that reached the 80 km/h. This causes the ball to move on the greens, to not be still, so you can not play in these conditions.” said Zamora.

The forecasts for today, the tournament director seemed to be more confident, “I am optimistic about the wind, will do much less wind tomorrow. It is expected rain, but if it does not rain much no problem. Also depends on the height of the clouds: if the height of the field, we have the same problem last year. But I am optimistic and I believe that Madeira and the Madeira Open deserve a good end. I am optimistic and we will try to do 54 holes, “praised José Maria Zamora.

The director also explained that, given the weather forecasts, the field can not be touched. “We choosed to not cut the greens: We were expecting this strong wind but still we can not cheat the wind and being so strong we had to decide that today we do not play.” Zamora said that cutting the greens would leave them faster and unplayable.

Let’s hope for better weather next days to come to a wonderful conclusion of this wonderful tournament at Santo da Serra Golf Club, in MadeiraPortugal.
