Spain Golf – Solheim Cup 2023 joins the ‘Costa del Sol Zero Footprint’ project

Finca Cortesin Golf. Solheim Cup joins Costa del Sol Zero Footprint project

The Solheim Cup aims to be more sustainable

To enhance its goal of being an environmentally friendly event, the Solheim Cup 2023, a women’s golf competition pitting Europe against the United States from September 18 to 24 at Finca Cortesin golf course, in Malaga, has adopted a new set of sustainability standards. Being hosted on the Costa del Sol, the Solheim Cup 2023 became involved with the “Costa del Sol Zero Footprint” initiative.

Costa del Sol is now the first tourist destination in the world to measure and compensate for the carbon footprint of every visitor, regardless of the nature of their journey. Your golf holidays in Costa del Sol will be, from now on, more sustainable than ever.

As Francisco Salado, president of both institutions, says: “The Costa del Sol is once again a pioneer and becomes a benchmark with a project that Turismo Costa del Sol has been working on for some time and which is another example of the clear commitment that both the Malaga Provincial Council and Turismo Costa del Sol make for the sustainability of this popular golf holiday destination”.

“As an added bonus, sustainability is one of the most telling metrics of a place’s overall appeal, popularity, and reputation. The Costa del Sol, however, is well aware that it must play in that league or risk being left behind. Because we believe that responsible tourist development must serve as the central tenet of the Costa del Sol’s future success”, he continues.

Tourists who visit the Costa del Sol, whether to play in the region’s stunning golf courses or not, can participate in the initiative by visiting the project website, entering the details of their trip, and getting the result of their carbon footprint in kilogrammes of CO2 and its equivalent in trees planted.

Throughout collaboration with another initiative, the “Málaga Viva”, over 340.000 trees have been planted in the province and land banks are being established to reforest and offset the carbon impact.

The third edition of the Aware Golf Strategy returns to Barceló Montecastillo Resort

The Martin Cummins Golf Performance Academy by Castellana Golf is bringing back its ‘Aware Golf Strategy’ courses to the Barceló Montecastillo Golf and Sport Resort, in the Costa de la Luz, near Cádiz.

On March 2, 3, and 4, participants in this innovative golf training course will have access to the golf course, the practice course, the training rooms, and even the hotel gym, as well as a unique approach to training and playing style that helps the amateur player decrease his or her handicap without changing his or her technique or swing.

Besides the actual instruction days, the training course also provides three green fees, unlimited balls at the driving range, hotel accommodations for two nights (breakfast and dinner included both nights), and transportation to and from the golf course.

“We are really glad to cooperate with the Martin Cummins Golf Performance Academy by offering these strategic courses throughout the year. The diversity of our facilities, with a golf course designed by Nicklaus, a top-class driving range, two short-game areas, a gym and numerous meeting rooms, allow us to host this type of event with a total guarantee of success”, says Guillermo Pérez Gutiérrez, Golf Manager of the Barceló Montecastillo Golf and Sport Resort.

Half an hour from the beach and just ten minutes from the airport, the newly refurbished Barceló Montecastillo Golf and Sport Resort is nestled between a wonderful natural environment and a castle dating back to the 19th century.

Nearly 40 private villas and more than 120 rooms are available at this resort. Each accommodation follows a new B-Room concept with a contemporary design, while yet maintaining the hotel’s signature classic and exquisite aesthetic.

As a Jack Nicklaus design from 1992, the Montecastillo golf course is a lengthy and challenging test of golfing skill.

Last year, Portugal was close to matching the records broken in 2019 in the tourism sector. The National Statistics Institute (INE) released preliminary data on tourism activities, showing that hotels and other tourist-related businesses served 26.5 million guests and registered 69.5 million overnight stays in total throughout the year.

The number of visitors was down 2.3% and the number of overnight stays was down 0.9% compared to 2019 before the pandemic. The increases were 83.3% and 86.3%, respectively, compared to 2021, a year still feeling the effects of covid-19.

According to INE, domestic overnight visits increased in 2022 in all regions compared to 2019. The highest growth in non-local overnight stays was seen in the North (+4.3%), followed by the Azores (+5.1%), and Madeira (+4.5%).

Overall, compared to 2019, domestic overnight stays climbed by 8.6%, while international overnight stays dropped by 5%.

In 2022, the United Kingdom was the top outbound market, accounting for 19.3% of all overnight stays by non-locals. This was over three times the value from 2021 but 4% less than 2019. Germany (11.5%), Spain (10.8%), and France (9.3%) are the next largest markets. The USA accounted for 7.5% in 2022, up 327.4% from the previous year and 26.9% from 2019. Other markets that saw significant increases were Brazil and Ireland.
