Quinta Da Ria – Saturday, 28th July 2012 – Weekly Competition

It has been been nearly three years ago since the Algarve Golf Society has played Quinta Da Ria. A course designed by the famous golf architect Rocky Roquemore famed for such classics as San Lorenzo, Quinta Da Lago (North) & Vale Do Lobo Royal. His trademarks are all here on Ria; open fairways, abundant bunkers and large contoured rolling greens. It is easy on foot and a delight on the eye with no on course construction and the back nine holes tracking the outer boundary with fabulous coastal views giving way to sweet smelling orange groves. The course was in fine form though the greens would have benefitted from a good cut and roll. The centrally located clubhouse with a large open terrace area is great place to meet for pre and post game drinks. It also doubles up as a clubhouse for its sister course Quinta Da Cima which is to its side – another one well worth a visit and shall be on our calendar very soon.

Afterwards it was another turn from our ‘Experience’ series with a visit to a local portuguese cafe / restaurant on the seafront at Olhão. Fresh prawns and crabs is the speciality here at this important fishing port city. Olhão takes his name from a big natural water fountain, an ‘eye of water’, like the locals call it (Olhão means Big Eye). The Olhaneses (inhabitants of Olhão) are more notorious for the trip to Brazil, in a small fishing boat (60-65 ft) with 17 fisherman, that, without maps or any guiding tools (but the stars), went to warn King John VI, who was exiled in that country, that the French had been defeated and banished from Portugal.

Our thanks to Eve Koch for the co-ordination of another great ‘Experience’. Watch out for the next one mid- august this time coinciding with the sardine festival in Portimao.

Oceânico Old Course – Saturday, 14th July 2012 – Weekly Competition

It must be a combination of an excellent rate of €63.00 and that the Algarve Golf Society was playing what is considered to be one of the best courses in the Algarve that we had a field of x24 players today. It was a good mix of Chez Carlos members and guests who assembled to take on the ‘Grand Dame’ as it is affectionately known under the midday sun and blue skies. Buggies for just €15.00 were also popular.

It was also a smart field with many sporting the new Society high performance polo shirts supplied by Catmandoo Sportswear. If you are member they await your collection.

The course was in near perfect condition apart from some reconstruction work to a bunker on Hole 8. It was a great day rounded off back at the Chez Carlos Restaurant & Bar where Filipe had laid on some tasty treats.

There were two nearest the pins today this time the 15th and the Par 4 18th after two shots! Congratulations were also extended to Stuart Graham just 12 years old scoring a great 36 pts.

A new landmark was reached today with Peter & Eithne McMahon joining the Society to take our membership past the 50 mark. Come and join the Algarve Golf Society and meet new friends and have some fun.

Oceanico Pinhal – Saturday, 30th June 2012 – Weekly Competition

Oceanico Pinhal Golf Course had just re-opened after its routine summer maintenance programme. Whilst two greens were on temporaries the rest of the course was in great conditions. There were a few remarks about the slow greens but nothing which a sharp cut wouldn’t be able to rectify.
The Algarve Golf Society gathered a strong field of x20 players with a good representation of ladies for an individual stableford competition. Fresh blustery conditions prevailed throughout most of the day giving us all a respite from the recent hot weather here in the Algarve. Only five players achieved more than 30 points today – a challenging day indeed. Afterwards it was a return back to Parkys Bar for drinks and a well laid on spread of nibbles. Thanks to Dell and his team.

It was a most enjoyable day with another two members joining the Society membership. Anyone wanting to play golf in the Algarve this way please contact the Society – all are very welcome.
