Pinheiros Altos – Saturday 21st April – Weekly Competition

It was the turn to play the format of Pinheiros (Pines) and Sobreiros (Corks) with 24 players gathering midday beneath cloudy blue skies on the first tee at Pinheiros Altos. There was an ensemble of old and new members and guests playing today many of whose handicaps were mid-teens. A special welcome to Tracey McCall for his return back to the Society and Gary Findlay whom we haven’t seen for over two years.

It was a calm three holes before the wind made itself felt as we moved into the more exposed part of the course at hole 4. Special mention must go to David Bowles’ impressive eagle at the 435mts Par 5 6th hole (Pinheiros) and Simon Turner’s birdie at the 497mts Par 5 8th hole (Sobreiros). It was once again a great day of golf and we returned once again back to Parkies Bar for post game refreshment and nibbles. Thanks once again to Dell and his team for looking after us.

Oceanico Pinhal – Saturday 14th April. Weekly Competition

It was high time to return back to Oceanico Pinhal especially with the Oceanico Easter Special green fee rates in force and buggies at just €15.00. A strong turn out of x24players meant we had to split the group into two groups – it worked well. Particular mention has to be made to the course which was in great condition especially when there was some criticism of its awhile ago. Some of the group had not played it for several years – we were all impressed.

Blustery and changeable conditions today but at least there is some shelter on this one compared to Laguna. It was a great days golf and we returned back to the spirtual home of the Society the Chez Carlos Bar & Restaurant which had reopened the last week.

1st: Peter McMahon (h/c19): 34pts (13+21)

2nd: Peter Vaughan (h/c12): 34pts (16+18)

3rd: Carlos Ferreira (h/c12): 31pts (16+15)

Nearest The Pin (8th): Peter Vaughan

Golf poem

Golf Poem.
In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, And Rather Small.
Oh How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess,
Of The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I’ve Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.
My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.
It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry,
And Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,
If I Hit It Straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.
It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.
With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.
It’s Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball Knows … I’ll Be Back Tomorrow.

Stand proud you noble swingers of club and losers of balls
A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud. Almost feels like a hybrid.
