Portugal Golf – Pestana Silves Golf Course

 Silves Golf Course
Silves golf course opened in 2006 and is located in
a serene spot below the Monchique mountain range in the countryside inland from the coastal resort of Armaçao de Pera.

Finding it can prove difficult the first time you play as I was informed many of the road signs disappear from time to time. However, finding it is well worth while.

Many holes offer spectacular mountain views as well as overlooking palm trees and olive groves and the surrounding cork and citrus farms generate a true feeling of authentic Portuguese golf. Whilst the course is certainly not ‘a walk in the park’, you do get a feeling of peace and tranquillity, and even the rumble of a passing train will not disturb this ambience.

It is a course for all standards of players. Low handicappers will find it a serious challenge to come in under par. But high handicaps will always be able to enjoy their round.

And so it was on Saturday, despite the chill in the wind towards the end of our round. Scoring from the 13 players was not quite as good as normal, but perhaps that wind was a factor.

Once it had been pointed out to your organiser that he had misinterpreted one of the cards, we eventually found out who had won the prizes! The winner was never in doubt – that was our leader Carlos Ferreira (11 handicap) with 32 points. In 2nd place after a back 9 countback was Tony McInerney (22) with 30 points. Also on 30 were Ron McLachlan and David Exley.

Ladies winner was Mary Moran (28) with 26 points. Mary also won the nearest the pin with a fine tee shot at the 16th.

Post match refreshments and analysis of where we all went wrong was again at Chez Carlos restaurant . Another very pleasant Saturday.

Algarve Wine Route

Algarve Wine RouteSeven wineries, a passport, four routes, many wines to taste: it is with these ingredients that makes the Algarve Wine Route , that  was officially released by the Algarve Wine Commission and the Region of the Algarve Tourism in BTL – Turismo de Lisboa.

It is the culmination of a long process that dragged on for years, and finally allows to integrate seven wineries, all located in the western Algarve, a visitable route by tourists.”These seven wineries are, for now, those who are able to receive visitors, featuring a shop, a schedule, the possibility of doing business events and conditions, which are, for example, by having sanitary facilities and parking,” explained Carlos Garcias, president of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA).

Carlos Garcias adds that the reason why all these initial seven wineries are located in the Western Route is because “it is in this area of the Algarve which lies most of the wine production in the region.” But noted that ‘very soon’, the Wine Road is expected to integrate a cellar in Tavira – Quinta dos Correias, near Fuzeta.”Everything depends on the conditions they create for visitors on a regular basis,” says the head of CVA.

The Algarve Wine Route is divided into four routes – Gil Eanes Route, integrating the Monte da Casteleja in Lagos, Arade, integrating the Quinta do Francês Winery in Odelouca (Silves) and Quinta do Morgado da Torre, in Penina (Faro), Mourisco, with Quinta dos Vales in Lagoa / Silves, and Quinta de Mata Mouros, in Silves, and yet the Roadmap Cliffs, with the Adega do Cantor, in Guia ( Albufeira), and Quinta da Vinha in Vala ( Silves).

To follow the route without getting lost, tourists – and residents – have at their disposal a passport, a small booklet in Portuguese and English with all the information about the wineries, but also on monuments and museums of the areas covered, restaurants and hotels Route and adherent to the remaining producers of wine, even those who are not members of (yet) this Route.

“This passport will be distributed to tourists and is available at Faro Airport, but also in tourism offices and receptions in the hotel,” he said.

There also be undertaken promotional activities at Faro Airport, where the Wine Route Algarve will have a booth to provide wine tastings, provide information and offer the passport. This promotion is the main gateway for tourists in the region begins at Easter.

The Wine Route, sponsored by CVA with the financial support of the RTA, is operationalized by the Association of Adherents of the Algarve Wine Route, which includes producers, but also restaurants, hotels.

Carlos Garcias, added, ending in 2013 that the Algarve has produced only one million liters of wine, ‘which is very little in the national context. ” But how would emphasize Hermínio Rebelo, chief sommelier, are ‘ high quality ‘ wines and especially’ quality that is growing. ” And starting now be discoverable in a more organized manner by visitors and residents. Simply just carry their is a passport from which to explore this Wine Tour of the Algarve.
