Madeira registered record tourist numbers last year

According to data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), the island’s tourism industry had record-breaking success in 2022, with overnight guest counts exceeding 9.6 million and total income reaching 528.8 million euros.

The overall number of overnight stays in the region of Madeira last year increased to 9.6 million, with total and room income peaking at 528.8 and 365.5 million euros, respectively.

The main issuing markets exhibited a rise from 2021 to 2022, with the German market showing the largest increase, at 132.3 percent, followed by the resident markets in France (+109.7 percent), the United Kingdom (+99.4 percent), and Portugal (+48.1 percent).

Comparing the calculation for the year 2022 with 2019, the last year before the pandemic, the main markets, namely Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany, showed increases of around 77.1 percent, 8.4 percent and 0.8 percent, while France recorded a decrease of 11.5 percent.
