Old Course – Weekly Competition

Although it’s been raining for an unusual long period of time here in Algarve, we were fortunate having some sunshine and to play without rain.
It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to play on the Old Course, which still remains one of the best courses in Portugal.
We welcomed the new member Dave Hiwson and pleased to see long time members visiting the Algarve, Donald Adams and Charles Bradley.
The nearest-to-pin was on hole 4 and Jeff Seymour did the best shot.
Charles Bradley, playing for the last time with handicap 12 on the society, had a card with 38 points including 3 blobs. Jeff Seymour came in second place with a honest 35 points.
Being the first tournament of the year, Ann Moore was entitled to an award for the best score for ladies.
Back to the clubhouse at Chez Carlos restaurant, Filipe presented us with a selection of salads and appetizers that delighted everyone and he still do two drinks for the price of one.

Pinheiros Altos – Weekly Competition

Following the final day of the Tee Times AM / AM, played in idylic weather conditions during the past week, several of the Competitors, most who are members, decided to play in the Society Competition at Pinheiros Altos GC.
Once more and contrary to the weather forecast the sun shine and provided ideal golfing conditions for the 14 players taking part.
The course as normal was in good condition and the newer 9, which we played, has now knitted in to give a substantial challenge to all, in particular on the greens where straight putts are rarely found, but are all the same pace as the older greens.
The previous weeks golf obviously took toll of some players with several only scoring in the twenty odd point area, however some came through well with Frances Falconer picking up the Nearest the Pin prize, Alison Sinnamon on 32pts, and Trevor Ward on 33pts, not quite being able to catch the winner Donald Adams on 34points
The awards for the day were presented back at the Chez Carlos Restaurant ( Clubhouse ) where all enjoyed the usual nibbles and beverage, discussing where it went well or badly wrong, just the usual postmortem we swap at the end of every round.
Next Week: Saturday 5th December – 12:50 at Laguna GC

Quinta do Vale – Weekly Competition

A windy day that proved to be very difficult for all players, as you may see on the scores. Anyway, it was great to see Quinta do Vale GC in such excellent conditions, regarding tees, fairways and greens, as we are referring to a new golf course that suffered some consequences of some construction mistakes during it’s 1st and 2nd year.
Most of the players used the ‘very original’ promotion for the buggies: 1 free buggy in every 50€ worth of shopping.
The winner was Barnie with 32 points and in second place Jeff with 28 points. The 9th hole was chose for the front-nine nearest-to-pin with par 3, 140mt, against the wind, where most players should use a driver, was won by Robin Prescot. Brendan won the nearest-to-pin on the back-nine on hole 16th.
Back to the clubhouse we had also the company of some members and friends that could not play and the afternoon went well around some drinks.
Two important notes: 1st a good one – Alison is back home and recovering well. 2st – And a sad one is John Star is still having health problems and still at home, being looked after by Gina. His contact number is 00351 289 314 108.
Next weekend, answering to an invitation made by Boavista GC members, Chez Carlos Golf Society has a match against them on Saturday at 11:20, ‘single match play’, followed by a presentation in their local bar. We antecipate a good social day.
See you all on Saturday.
