Oceanico Pinhal – Christmas Day Competition

Turkey and trimmings were on hold as an ensemble of x8 players eager to make the best of the fine weather gathered at Oceanico Pinhal for the Society’s Christmas Day Competition.

All other Oceanico courses were closed as part of the ongoing winter maintenance programme so it was also an opportunity to find out if the rumours about the poor condition of Pinhal were true. I am pleased to report they were not. Greens were fine though rather slow to what we have been use to recently. New buggy paths have been laid down as well as an extensive prunning of the pines trees thus allowing more light onto the course. All in all it was good condition for winter.

Tommy Jensen continues his fine run of form with 35pts (15/20)- very credible on this tough scoring course. All others were sub 30pts!

2nd: Chris Milford (h/c13): 29pts

Oceanico Old Course – Saturday 17th December. Weekly Competition

A return back to the Oceanico Old Course is always a treat. Dry and mild weather continues here in the Algarve and whilst the course was surprisingly wet in places as we have had very little rain it was virtually void of golfers making once again for ‘millionaires’ golf.

Very little roll on the ball, indeed if any, played the course longer than usual complimented by immaculate greens especially when you consider we are in winter and a week away from Christmas! Individual stableford was the chosen format and Tommy Jensen was still in fine form even after a reduction of three shots on his Vilamoura Clube de Golf handicap. Good day in the sunshine and Pinhal scheduled for a Christmas Day game.

Joint Winners:
Tommy Jensen (h/c 16) – 36pts
Tony McInerney (h/c 24) – 36pts

Nearest The Pin (15th) : Uncontested

San Lorenzo – Saturday 10th December. Charity Golf Day

Magnificent rolling fairways and views stretching over the Ria Formosa estuary to Faro Island and the ocean beyond elevates San Lorenzo Golf Course by many as the best in the Algarve. Built in 1988 it has built a formidable reputation and was once ranked No2 in Europe just behind Valderrama – it presently resides at No24 just in front of Onyria Palmares at No26. San Lorenzo is simply is a must play course.

The Society once again supported another golf event this time in aid of Associacao Oncologica do Algarve a registered Charity giving practical help to cancer sufferers. With a green fee of just €50.00 it was always to be a very popular event and come the day 44 players took the field on a glorious sunny winter morning for an individual stableford competition. The course was in fine condition and with an stiff ocean breeze presented a tough challenge.

Eve Koch, Vilamoura Clube de Golfe member enthused ”This was my first time at San Lorenzo. The layout is on par with many other courses in the Algarve and the last hole is particularly challenging Very nice course with a cosy well decorated clubhouse and friendly staff. I look forward to returning very soon!”
