Chez Carlos Golf Society Membership & FPG membership 2010

Last year was my first running the Society which was originally formed back in 2003. In that time we have, what I believe is one of the friendliest and social golf societies in the Algarve embracing all standards and more importantly the active encouragement of ladies to take part. We have played a variety of courses from East to Central to West Algarve with good rates and times. This year will be similar and now with membership of the Federacao Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG) we will have the credentials to go with it. Above all else we play to have fun and an enjoyable game amongst friends.

Saturday will be the favoured day to play. Occasionally we might play midweek, support Charity Golf events and Club Days as we did this last year. They are often good value and you get an opportunity to meet new friends.

Our post game refreshment will alternate between Parkies Bar and the recently refurbished and spiritual home the Chez Carlos Restaurant at Parque das Amendoeiras, Vilamoura. Players and their guests are always invited to attend after the game. Happy hour rates are normally in force.

The sweep of just €5.00 seems to work well and depending on the field is split 1st, 2nd & 3rd. There is always a ‘Nearest the Pin’ hole.

Many of you have raised the question on how to play in the Chez Carlos Golf Society but more so of its membership. As the Society has now just become a member itself of the FPG below are details with a brief explanation.

NON-MEMBER / GUEST
Last year the Society was very successful in attracting new players to join us especially couples. ‘Guests’ are very welcome to play on any of our ‘open’ events and a non-member rate will be charged at a supplement of €5.00 per game. Handicaps will be at the total discretion of the management.

This is ideal for those ‘on holiday’ / ‘visiting’ the Algarve.

Oceanico Laguna – Saturday 25th February ’12. Weekly Competition

With a green fee of just €35.00 for a high season primetime slot of 10.00am this event was always to prove popular. The plan was to be off the course in time for the showdown rugby clash between England versus Wales in the Six Nations Cup. It all went to plan.

Laguna played its usually tricky self once again with quick greens and windy conditions. We say au revoir to Tony McInerney (aka two shot Tony) who has supported the Society so well this last few months. He is to return back to his Irish homeland to go and justify his annual subsription at this home course of Dundalk , Co Louth.,We’ll miss you and hopefully see you in September.

1st: Chris Milford (h/cap13): 33pts

2nd: Eileen Farren (h/cap24): 31pts (c/back 9 holes: 15pts)

3rd: Carlos Ferreira (h/cap12): 31pts (c/back 9 holes: 13pts)

Nearest The Pin (17th): Rob Jones

Oceanico O’Connor -Tuesday 21st February ’12. Mid-week competition

A impromtu game in Oceanico O’Connor, in as the day was a bank holiday in Portugal and there were a few eager golfers looking for a game especially as the fine weather continues. A specially arranged price of just €50.00 including a buggy to play O Connor was another great reason!

It was the Society first trip out of the Central Algarve this year (apart from Costa Azul ) and it was a question whether to take the old EN125 road or face the toll on the motorway. We as a Society will favour more local courses from now for this reason but on occasion will venture further afield.

Again golden brown fairways as evening ‘frost’ keeps the temperatures low so stopping the grass from growing. Tight fairways saw us play winter rules and the green were not as smooth as others we have played this year. Regardless, it was a super day to be out and we were well looked after by the staff. If you have never played either this course or the Faldo go make the effort it is a great venue.

1st: Robin Prescott (h/cap 13): 31pts

2nd: Tony McInerney (h/cap 24): 30pts

Nearest the Pin (13th): Tommy Jensen
