Old Course – 1st September 2012

Hot on the heels of the success of the Summer event at Quinta Do Lago we returned back to the Old Course in Vilamoura – a favourite of many. There is a couple of weeks remaining before high season resumes and the cheaper rates disappear. Consequently we managed to raise an ensemble of 18 players for an Individual Stableford competition beneath blue skies and sunshine.

Ideal conditions once again and some great scores many of which were 30+ points. Special note must go to Chez Carlos member Derek Hughes who commented on his 45pts as being ‘the 3rd best round he has played.’ I think it was a day when it all went right for him and a hearty congratulation; occasionally they do happen. The Society will be reducing his handicap accordingly as it will be to Dean Chambers & Rob Heap.

1st: Derek Hughes (h/cap 11): 45pts
2nd: Dean Chambers (h/cap 15): 39pts (b/6: 17pts)
3rd: Rob Heap (h/cap 13): 39pts (b/6: 14pts)

Quinta do Lago South – Sunday, 26th August 2012

Our first Summer Event was always likely to be popular after all we were to play one of the finest courses in the Algarve at a very special price followed by a BBQ back at our base in Vilamoura. We gathered mid-morning at the QDL driving range for a brief presentation at the new Paul McGinley Fitting Centre. State of the art video equipment and swing analysis with professional assistant ensures your new clubs are tailor made. It is well worth a visit.

Quinta Do Lago South has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times. In 1989, Colin Montgomerie won his first European Tour event here by an impressive 11 strokes, set a course record of 63 and a Tour record of 24 under par. The course is laid out on beautiful undulating terrain with shady umbrella pines and a few man-made lakes that attract many aquatic bird species. The signature hole is the scenic par-3 15th (160mts) with a long carry over a lake to the green set amongst pine trees. Warren Griffiths took the honours of nearest the pin here after hitting his shot to within a metre and securing a birdie. Special mention must also go to Paul Beevers taking the Longest Drive with a mighty 283mts on the fabulous 17th hole – awesome.

The course was in fine condition which is something that you always come to expect from Quinta. Sun and blue skies were the order of the day though a coastal breeze helped from the temperature from soaring – perfect.

Multiple prizes today with four nearest the pin competitions, Gross Score, net Stableford and a Team Stableford. Special thanks are extended to our sponsors that include in no particular order Onyria Palmares, Vale Do Lobo, Monte Rei, Pestana Group, Boavista Golfe, Morgado / Alamos Golfe, Catmandoo Clothing, Chez Carlos Restaurant & Bar, Professional Golfer Monia Bernardo and Chez Carlos member Chris Milford.

Afterwards it was an optional return back to The Chez Carlos Restaurant & Bar for a specially prepared BBQ that included suckling pig, wild boar and octopus salad. Our thanks are extended to Fillipe and his team for looking after us so well and to all those that took part throughout the day. It was a great event and one which we are sure to repeat.

Oceânico Millennium – Saturday, 11th August 2012 – Weekly Competition

Today’s event was switched to Millennium as reports indicated Pinhal was not in the best of condition. It was one of the hottest days of the year with temperatures soaring into the mid 40’s. Nevertheless fourteen players were keen to take on the course under the blazing sun. It was also an opportunity to try out the new Chez Carlos Catmandoo polo shirts. They performed admirably and look great too!

The course was presented very well with some tight front pin positions. It was a day of strong scoring with 10 of the 14 players scoring in the 30’s. Good performances on the back nine though this is probably the easier of the two. Afterwards it was back to Parkies Bar for some well earned liquid refreshments and chicken n’ ribs.

1st: Anne Campbell (h/cap 21): 38pts (b/9:23pts)
2nd: Eve Koch (h/cap 19): 38pts (b/9:22pts)
3rd : Chris Cooper (h/cap 5): 35pts (b/9: 18pts)
