Chez Carlos Golf Society Membership & FPG membership 2010

Last year was my first running the Society which was originally formed back in 2003. In that time we have, what I believe is one of the friendliest and social golf societies in the Algarve embracing all standards and more importantly the active encouragement of ladies to take part. We have played a variety of courses from East to Central to West Algarve with good rates and times. This year will be similar and now with membership of the Federacao Portuguesa de Golfe (FPG) we will have the credentials to go with it. Above all else we play to have fun and an enjoyable game amongst friends.

Saturday will be the favoured day to play. Occasionally we might play midweek, support Charity Golf events and Club Days as we did this last year. They are often good value and you get an opportunity to meet new friends.

Our post game refreshment will alternate between Parkies Bar and the recently refurbished and spiritual home the Chez Carlos Restaurant at Parque das Amendoeiras, Vilamoura. Players and their guests are always invited to attend after the game. Happy hour rates are normally in force.

The sweep of just €5.00 seems to work well and depending on the field is split 1st, 2nd & 3rd. There is always a ‘Nearest the Pin’ hole.

Many of you have raised the question on how to play in the Chez Carlos Golf Society but more so of its membership. As the Society has now just become a member itself of the FPG below are details with a brief explanation.

NON-MEMBER / GUEST
Last year the Society was very successful in attracting new players to join us especially couples. ‘Guests’ are very welcome to play on any of our ‘open’ events and a non-member rate will be charged at a supplement of €5.00 per game. Handicaps will be at the total discretion of the management.

This is ideal for those ‘on holiday’ / ‘visiting’ the Algarve.

Salgados – Saturday 21st Jan’12. Weekly Competition

A short trip for us this week as the Society gathered once again under blue skies and sunshine at Salgados near Albufeira. It was yet another good turnout aided by a handful of newcomers to the Society that brought the total up to 22 players with a good representation of ladies this week.

The course was relatively quiet and were able to tee off ahead of our scheduled 12:32 slot – we were all round easily in the daylight. Given the dry spell we are experiencing here in Portugal the course looked good on arrival and played well with quick smooth greens. Winter rules were in force.

Congratulations to Aju Guest as this was her first formal golf competition and for posting 23pts. Once again we met back to a busy Parkies Bar in Vilamoura for nibbles and refreshments,

1st: John Savage (h/c23): 37pts

2nd: Pat Horkan (h/c8): 35pts (c/b 9:20pts)

3rd: Richard Horsepool (h/c10): 35pts (c/b 9:17pts)

4th: Mary Strutt (h/c16): 34pts (c/b: 21pts)

Ladies Nearest The Pin (12th): Anne Savage

Gents Nearest The Pin (12th): Sean Sweeney

Oceanico Old Course named No1 Course in Portugal

January 5th 2012 – Oceânico Golf, the leading golf operator in the Algarve has begun 2012 with a bang, following the news that one of its most prestigious courses, the Oceanico Old Course, has been voted Portugal’s #1 course in the prestigious Today’s Golfer Travel Awards. The vote was carried out by readers of the UK’s most read golf publication, with the Oceânico Old Course emerging a convincing winner with an impressive 31% of the nominations. The roll of honour, which was announced this week, also saw Portugal’s Algarve coast named the ‘best-value’ golfing destination in continental Europe with 32% of the vote.
“This accolade is especially pleasing for the whole team at Oceânico Golf as it provides a fantastic springboard to kick off the New Year. To be nominated by readers of Today’s Golfer magazine is an honour and also a clear indicator that the Oceânico Old Course remains a firm favourite amongst travelling golfers,” commented Chris Stilwell, CEO of Oceânico Golf.

The award-winning Par 73, 6254m Oceânico Old Course is situated in the heart of Vilamoura a mere 20 minute drive from Faro airport. The stunning Frank Pennink designed parkland layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees, over gently undulating natural terrain. Opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated in 1996 and remains to this day one of Europe’s finest layouts.

In addition to raising the Oceânico Old Course to new heights of quality, an attractive new clubhouse and adjacent putting green were also built at that time. As with all Oceânico courses, environmental protection practices are strictly adhered to by means of detailed management systems in line with guidelines established by ISO 14001 standards, Green Globe and Committed to Green programmes. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers.
