Pinheiros Altos (Corks & Olives), 23rd March 2013

Everyone turned up to play today, at Pinheiros Altos, but the unusually poor weather here in the Algarve continued and we postponed our game 24 hours to the Sunday. The Oliveiras course (original back 9) was heavily water logged making play and walking difficult as pull trolleys at times had to be kept to the path. Anyway, golfers are a hardy bunch and we were all keen to get a game in at the weekend. The Society welcomed two new players Tony Lopategui who took Nearest The Pin on the island 8th and his wife Elaine. They enjoyed their game so much and vowed to join but it was to be David Bowles’ day with some fine stroke play who posted 37pts – six points ahead of Carlos Ferreira.

It was an impromptu return back to Parkies where the ensemble had gathered joined by many other friends. After all the effort we got our game this weekend.

Millennium Competition, 9th March 2013

11 players turned out at Millennium, rescheduled from Morgado after heaving rains.

The competition was the start of a surprise party for Jim Kearney on his 70th birthday, and everybody was keeping away from Jim to avoid letting the cat out of the bag.

We welcomed Ulla Peura, friend of Henning and Gudrun, and she played superbly off 15 to scoop both nearest the pins & the longest drive. Well done Ulla!

The biggest surprise was still to come as neither Jim nor Deirdre knew that Siobhan had arranged for their two daughters to join in the birthday celebrations. When they appeared at the prize giving this proved to be the best prize of all.

Back to the prize giving and it was definitely Jim’s day after his lesson with Hugo Santos, he took first prize with 38 points, holding off Christer & Eve with 37 & 35 respectively.

After the prize giving we all joined Jim, Deirdre and their daughters at the Thai restaurant in Vilamoura, and a great evening was had by all.

Alamos Golf Course, 9th February 2013

Alamos Golf Course : Chez Carlos Golf Society Competion

17 players tee’d off on another sunny but chilly Algarve day.
Alamos golf course was in pretty good condition with the greens running true and this was reflected in the scores.
Scores were as low as 24 and as high as 41 and the four players who struggled to make the 30 points mark were rewarded with an extra shot on their handicaps, these were Jeff Williams, Colette Bourke, Tony McInerney and Chris Milford.
At the top end Alan Wesson had another amazing golf round shooting 3 under on the back 9 with 3 birdies and 6 pars – well done Alan who has racked up 3 wins in a row and will now be playing off 5.
Eve Koch and Will Cogan also produced stunning golf rounds of 39 points with Eve producing a fantastic birdie on the 12th with a 40 metre bunker shot to 1 metre.
Will came second after a count back and will be playing off 10 whilst Eve has been granted her wish and will be playing off 16.7 in future.
David Bowles started the day with 4 pars and his tee shot on the Par 3 – 3rd to 4 feet gave him closest to the pin.
Peter Verschoor hit a cracker on the 16th to get inside Alan Wesson and enjoy his bottle of wine.
On the 12th hole Deirdre Kearney showed her husband Jim what she can do with a great drive to secure the longest drive – the second lady to win the longest drive in two weeks!! – come on guys – whats that that all about?

Results:
1st – Alan Wesson 41
2nd – Will Cogan 39
3rd – Eve Koch 39
Closet to the pin on Hole 3 – David Bowles and Peter Verschoor and on the 16th
Longest drive on the 12th – Deirdre Kearney

Prize giving was held at Chez Carlos restaurant and many thanks to Fillipe and his staff for the snacks enjoyed by all

To all of those taking part in the Spanish weekend – enjoy yourselves and play well.

To those who cannot make the trip, we will be playing at Pinhal golf course on Saturday and I will advise of the format once we know how many are playing.
