Portimão had the biggest growth in the Algarve

The Association of Hotels and Tourism Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), with headquarters in Albufeira, reports that the February 2023 occupancy rate for tourist accommodation units in the Algarve was 48.7%, the highest February occupancy rate in the past 16 years.

According to the data released, the occupancy rate for February was 5.4% higher than the same month in 2019 and 2.1% higher than the same month in 2020, the last month before the Covid-19 restrictions.

According to AHETA, the markets that most contributed to the growth witnessed were the national market with +1.4pp, the Dutch market with +0,9pp, and the British market with +0.5pp in comparison to February 2020.

As said by AHETA, the highest gains compared to 2020 were seen in the regions of Portimão (+16.5pp), Monte Gordo (+11.1pp), and Tavira (+7.2pp) in February.

The signs are clear: the Algarve tourism sector is bouncing back from the economic crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. After a tough period of two years, the Algarve is recovering well, with a good start in 2023, but there is a long way to go in order to make a full recovery.

Falésia Beach, in the Algarve, ranks 6th among the world’s best beaches

With its “rich red sand cliffs” and “a white sand beach that appears to continue on forever”, both of which lead to the “blue-green ocean”, Falésia beach in the municipality of Albufeira, on the Algarve, was voted number 6 in TripAdvisor’s annual list of the finest beaches in the world.

The Algarve beach has been a favourite of international platform users for a long time, and it is the only Portuguese beach to make the list. Compared to 2021, Falésia beach has risen 6 places.

One more thing to add to this impressive accomplishment: this beach was ranked the best among beaches in continental Europe.

A user’s comment, highlighted by TripAdvisor in a statement, says: “it’s a magnificent beach… the sun strikes the many tones of orange and yellow sand on the towering cliffs that reflect a warm colour. The sand on the beaches is a beautiful golden yellow. The water is perfect for bodyboarders and surfers since the waves pound the shore with a mild fury.

Falésia beach enjoys a prestigious location, between Albufeira and Vilamoura, close to two of the most famous tourist destinations in Portugal and some of the best golf courses in the country, like the famous Dom Pedro Old or the always popular Salgados golf course.

Ben Schmidt wins PT Tour’s Bom Sucesso Classic

At PT Tour’s Bom Sucesso Classic, the Englishman Ben Schmidt triumphed. Tomás Bessa, the best Portuguese competitor, finished sixth and maintains his lead atop the circuit’s Order of Merit.

Ben Schmidt won the tournament owing to a phenomenal second round in which he shot 61. (-11). A total of 132 (71+61, -12) was his final score, one stroke below the second-placed Irishman Daniel Mulligan’s (67+66,-11).

Again, Tomás Bessa represented his country well on the golf course, as he finished in a tie for sixth place with North Irishman Owen Crooks after 140 strokes (-4) throughout the tournament.

It should be remembered that Tomás Bessa has already won two titles (Palmares Open II and III) this season on the circuit for professional golfers that usually takes place in Algarve golf courses, but this time travelled to the Lisbon region, to Bom Sucesso.

“Even though I made a bogey on the opening hole, it was my greatest competitive round ever. I made tiny adjustments last night on the putting green, and this morning on the driving range, and everything went smoothly, as long as I kept faithful to the plan”, the youngster Ben Schmidt stated at the end of the competition, on March 3rd.

This was the tenth tournament of this season on the PT Tour, four of which were won by Portuguese golfers – in addition to the two triumphs of Tomás Bessa, Vítor Londot Lopes won the Palmares Classic, and Tomás Melo Gouveia also won a title at the Dom Pedro Pinhal Open II.
