Oceanico Millennium Saturday 2nd July – Weekly Competition

The Society played more locally this Saturday with a visit to Oceanico Millennium. Its green fees dropped very slightly again as July and August are low season for the reason being it’s simply regarded by most as too hot to play. Actually some days are mild making it perfect golfing condtions. It’s a good month to come and play.

A compliment of twelve golfers assembled and this time we played a four man team format with two scores to count on the front nine and three on the back nine full handicap stableford. The course was in fine condition though the some greens were at times on the slow side, however, that didn’t stop some good scores being posted.

Our thanks once again to Parkies Bar for laying on a few complimentary nibbles and bites afterwards.

1st – Barry Sye, Mark Punter, Ian Wilson, Shane Hall – 103pts

Boavista Charity Golf Day – Saturday 25th June 2011

This Saturday saw the Society support an organised charity golf day hosted by Boavista GC in aid of two local charities. Often these events are very good value, well organised and appeal to our philanthropic nature.

Its promotion started several months ago and by time of the event it was well over-subscribed with a reserve list. The Society had blocked off several tee times in advance so were assured of a game regardless. Format on this occasion was a betterball pairs stableford full handicap played off the yellow slope rating.

Right from the start you sensed it was a well organised day with names and times on buggies in correct order to be escorted out to the course ready for a shotgun start. Marshalls with clipboards were on hand assisting arrivals.

The course was presented beautifully with a selection of rather tight pin positions. Midway round at the free refreshment bar it was agreed that a mid forties score had to be achieved to be mentioned in dispatches – we were right.

Afterwards was a superb BBQ incl wine, entertainment and live auction for just €50.00 – great value indeed.

Congratulations to Captain Roger Blay and his team on a successful day and to Boavista Golf Club – always worth the trip.

Oceanico Victoria 18th June – Weekly Competition

Oceanico Victoria Golf Course does not really get much cheaper than €80.00 which includes a buggy so realistically if we are to play this course it will be in low season period (now). Actually in July & August it drops a further €5.00. Hosting the Portuguese Masters has given it massive exposure and is on many people’s list to play if they have not done so by now, hence another reason to play here.

The course, like the weather, did not disappoint. A handful of greens had been treated as part of its summer maintenance programme. Fairways and tees were excellent and the rough, if you could find your ball, helped wreck a good score.

Individual Stableford was the format this week; a departure from the recent team games. Peter Densham was in fine form playing in his words ‘one of his lucky courses’. 21pts the first nine set him up for a game winning 38pts. Robin’s steady 15 & 16pts coasted him to second place. The remaining scores settled in and around the mid twenties. Another good day.

1st: Peter Densham (h/c 15) – 38pts

2nd: Robin Prescott (h/c 14 – 31pts
