Pinheiros Altos, 6th October 2012

It is lead into the Portugal Masters consequently we had another strong turnout to our event at Pinheiros Altos this week. Corks & Olives format today with the infamous island hole on the back nine – always worthy of a nearest the pin competition. Another perfect day for golf with sun, blue skies and a gentle breeze which made it more surprising that only a few players broke 30pts with a three way contention to win on only 31 pts.

There was a welcome back to Bob Guard for the winter with us as well as Jim Kearney and his wife Deirdre. As members they were eager to collect their new Chez Carlos GS polo shirts.

Thanks again to Dell and his team for laying on a great spread afterwards at Parkies. We look forward to Vila Sol next Saturday which already is oversubscribed!

1st: Phil Eatock (h/cap 21): 31pts (13+18)
2nd: Robin Prescott (h/cap 12): 31pts (15+16)
3rd: Jim Kearney (h/cap 17): 31pts (20+11)

Oceanico Millennium – Saturday, 15th September 2012

A field of x20 ensured we had a large enough field to enjoy another betterball pairs stableford competition on this occasion at Oceanico Millennium. Sun and blue skies were once again the order of the day. Even with an adjustment to the handicaps of 7/8th there was still some mighty scoring and without this we would have witnessed scores beyond 50pts! A special warm welcome extended to Henning & Gudren Loehr for their first game with us and introduced by member Eve Koch – the international reach of the Society continues to expand!

Congratulations go to Lynda Dickson who in her own right shot a net 64 – we feel an reduction coming her way!

1st: Mike Dickson (h/cap 13) & Lynda Dickson (h/cap 32): 49pts
2nd: Annie Hallewell (h/cap 21) & Simon D Turner (h/cap 16): 45pts

Charity Golf Day – Pestana Gramacho – Friday, 7th September 2012

This was the second Charity Golf Day the Society supported this Summer. This time it was for the Refugio dos Burros a donkey sanctuary established in 1991 located at Estombar in the western Algarve. They rescue and rehome numerous donkeys, dogs and cats and receive no government subsidies and depend totally on donations and sales from their charity shops (Lagoa, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo) and fund raising events. All forms of support is very much appreciated so do make contact if you feel as though you may be able to help – www.refugiodosburros.org.

The Algarve Golf Society submitted six pairs to a full field of over eighty players. Betterball pairs was the selected format off the Gramacho sloping rating. It’s an interesting and varied course with two green options on nine of the eighteen holes as it was formerly a nine hole course. The extension of the additional nine was overseen by Open Champion winner Nick Price.

A buffet lunch followed with raffle and auction all in aid to bolster revenue for the sanctuary. In total €2275.00 was raised and has been earmarked for new gates and fencing. It was a great day and all in aid of a worthy cause.

Society members shone on the day taking a well-earned 1st price with 48pts and Eve Koch a Nearest the Pin.

1st: Russ Brittain & Simon D Turner: 48pts
2nd: Phil Callaghan & Terry Simpson: 47pts
3rd: John & Paulette Usher: 45pts
