West Cliffs Golf Course - Óbidos

Here comes the West Cliffs in Silver Coast, in Óbidos, Golf Course brother of Praia D’El Rey.

Did you know that on North of the Algarve, Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort in Óbidos is the golf course which receives more golf players in Portugal?  According to data of the CNIG, Praia D’El Rey Golf Course had 38,000 rounds of golf in 2016. In the last 10 years has never been below the 35,000 golf rounds and has already surpassed some times the 40,000 golf rounds, and the large majority of golf players are from north european countries, including Uk and Ireland.

The 18 holes of the nearby West Cliffs Golf Links and clubhouse are scheduled to open in June. Offering a prime location and exclusivity , the golf course will be in the heart of a new 200-acre resort, West Cliffs Resort, adjacent to a stretch of 2.5 kilometres of Golden cliffs and Atlantic coast, with five-star hotel and villas, but with a density of construction of one third compared to that of Praia D’El Rey Golf Resort in Óbidos.

West Cliffs Golf Course, been design in a manner that , players will have the privilege of , overlooking the sea in all golf holes, with the signature of Cynthia Dye, niece of one of the sacred monsters of design of golf courses, the American Pete Dye. It is the first track “Dye” in Portugal and only the fourth in Europe, came to strengthen the golf cluster in this part of the coast with four golf courses (Royal Guardian Bom Sucesso, Óbidos, Praia D’El Rey and now West Cliffs) five minutes of distance between them.

“Our vision was to build a golf course that fits perfectly into the natural environment and that offers a truly wonderful golfing experience,” explains Francisco Cadet, Director of Praia D’El Rey Golf Course in Óbidos and West Cliffs. “So, we haven’t touched in almost anything. We kept the dunes and vegetation – we have also some holes with vegetation in the middle of the fairway, “he adds.

Cynthia Dye corroborates it. She never imagined until a year and a half, that the project ever move forward: “With the Atlantic visible from every hole, West Cliffs is the most natural field imaginable (…)”.

With five tees on each golf hole, Fescue grass in the fairways and , agrostis on the greens West Cliffs Golf Course will be a par-72 with a  maximum of 6382 metres (from black tees), so it’s not a long golf course. “It’s exciting and dramatic, but at the same time has been designed in such a way that it can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. In one of the most spectacular golf course in Europe, will be a lot of fun to play and I can’t wait to see the reactions of golfers when they get here and see what we have created, “says the director.

As a golfer, Francisco Cadet  believes that West Cliffs Golf Course will be easier than Praia D’El Rey, because as soon as you get to the fairway, there will be no great difficulty – players will have relatively short shots to the greens.

Physical requirement? “It’s not hard to do on foot, but we estimate that nearly half of the players will use buggies, against 25% in Praia D’El Rey. The more complicated are the links between the 15 and 17, which are somewhat uneven, “explains the director.

West Cliff Golf Course started to be promoted in November last year only on the operators and at the moment is already being released to the public. “We started to appear in English, German, Swedish magazines,” explains, the Golf Director.
