Algarve is the European Golf Destination of the Year 2014The Algarve has just been elected ” European Golf Destination of the Year 2014 ‘ , the main award of the golf tourism industry , awarded by more than 500 operators members of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators ( IAGTO ) .

The award was presented yesterday, 14 in Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain ) , during a ceremony of the International Golf Travel Market ( IGTM ) , the largest trade show dedicated to the world of golf travel industry , which handles about 50 million players per year.

The other European destinations nominated by IAGTO this category were Dublin & Central Ireland , Ireland , Gran Canaria , Canary Islands , Spain , Scotland Highlands , Scotland, Riviera & Provence , the French Riviera , and Lisbon Golf Coast , also in Portugal .

Recent awards and nominations received by Algarve golf courses  prove the high quality of this strategic product to the destination . The Algarve is represented in the ” Top 100 courses in continental Europe”  , is considered the best golf destination in Continental Europe by the price / benefit ( best value for money ) and has the best golf national awards “Publituris Portugal Travel Awards “.

Recently, Portugal was named ” Best Golf Destination of Europe” in the World Travel Awards , the Oscars of Tourism , with the strong contribution of the 40 courses in the Algarve, where is concentrated half of the country offer for golf practice .

Spain remains the nr. one destination for golf in Europe

A new study of the habits of European golfers reveals that Spain is still the number one tourist destination for travelers from the United Kingdom , France , Germany and Scandinavia.

These findings are part of a new document entitled “European Spotlight on Golf Tourism to Spain” which was commissioned by Reed Travel Exhibitions , organizers of IGTM and developed by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc.

According to this document , the 28.5 % of golfers who traveled to Spain to play golf , 12.7% visited the Costa del Sol, 3.9% went to the Costa Brava , the 3.2 % went to the Canary Islands and 8.7 %  to other areas.

The study also reveals the popularity of other destinations: 17% visited Portugal , 16.1% traveled to Britain and Ireland 7.5% booked trips to Turkey , 7.1 % ended up in France and 6.9 % crossed to USA.

Among the most prominent of this study include the following :

  •  The average length of a golf trip to Spain is seven nights .
  •  Tourists traveling to Spain usually stay in places four and five stars .
  •  The golf tourists spent daily between 170 euros ( British golfer ) and 230 euros ( the Scandinavians ) .
  •  Golfers often go to play five or six times during each golf trip .
  •  During a holiday week , golfers play four different Spanish fields .

“This latest study shows that Spain continues to lead European tourism industry courses and illustrates why thousands of golfers still prefer their regions,” explains Peter Grimster , IGTM fair director .
” Among the key factors that put Spain ahead of its rivals is the level and diversity of its golf courses , the quality of their accommodation and good weather throughout the year.”

Dyson refuses to play in Turkey to prepare his defense

Simon DysonContinues the saga between Simon Dyson and the European Tour. The  English man, a regular presence at Portugal Masters, has announced his non-attendance from the third and penultimate event of the final series , the Turkish Airlines Open, waiting for the Tour to make a decision by the action irregular committed on the 8th hole during the second round of the BMW Masters. That way he will focus on preparing his defense that presumably will be the end of the month.

Simon Dyson Momment of dequalificationdescalificadoSimon Dyson was disqualified for seven days touching the line between his brand and the hole with the ball . This offense is punishable by two-stroke penalty not reflected on Dyson’s  card so it was disqualified for signing a wrong card .
After carefully reviewing the action performed by the player, the Tour has been understood to be a serious breach of the rules. Dyson is facing a possible sanction ranging from a simple warning or a fine to expulsion from the European Tour.

Simon Dison has been a regular presence in Portugal Masters .
