Oceanico Victoria 18th June – Weekly Competition

Oceanico Victoria Golf Course does not really get much cheaper than €80.00 which includes a buggy so realistically if we are to play this course it will be in low season period (now). Actually in July & August it drops a further €5.00. Hosting the Portuguese Masters has given it massive exposure and is on many people’s list to play if they have not done so by now, hence another reason to play here.

The course, like the weather, did not disappoint. A handful of greens had been treated as part of its summer maintenance programme. Fairways and tees were excellent and the rough, if you could find your ball, helped wreck a good score.

Individual Stableford was the format this week; a departure from the recent team games. Peter Densham was in fine form playing in his words ‘one of his lucky courses’. 21pts the first nine set him up for a game winning 38pts. Robin’s steady 15 & 16pts coasted him to second place. The remaining scores settled in and around the mid twenties. Another good day.

1st: Peter Densham (h/c 15) – 38pts

2nd: Robin Prescott (h/c 14 – 31pts

Nearest The Pin (8th): Fred Holmes

Pinhal Saturday 11th June – Weekly Competition

It has been nearly a year since the Society last played Pinhal so a visit was long overdue. Remodelled several times since it opened it has now probably got one of the toughest starts in golf on the Algarve. It can sometimes favour you if they are operating a two tee start and that you begin off the 10th – this was not the case today; off the first for us!

Though the greens were on the slow side the course was in superb condition. Next week it closes as part of its summer maintenance schedule and the rough would benefit from a quick trim in places. Once again we played a better ball stableford with four teams battling it out beneath glorious weather. Refreshments and ‘nibbles’ were once again laid on at Parkies.

1st: Fred Holmes & Shane Hall: 39pts

Nearest The Pin: Shane Hall (again)

Laguna Saturday 4th June – Weekly Competition

June brings with it the start of lower prices and special deals from golf courses often with buggy included; quite a necessity when the summer temperatures arrive. Today was one such deal the Society took advantage of and so did its members.

‘Millionaires golf’ is often not a term associated too often with Laguna but it was the order on this day. Ideal conditions and only a handful of players on the course – perfect. It was decided to have a x3 ‘man’ team event with two scores to count out of the three, a great format for team bonding, and of course the obligatory Nearest The Pin on the 17th.

A good day had by all with post drinks refreshments once again at Parkies Bar.

1st: Shane Hall, Annie Hallewell, Simon D Turner: 63pts

Nearest The Pin: Shane Hall
