Laguna Saturday 4th June – Weekly Competition

June brings with it the start of lower prices and special deals from golf courses often with buggy included; quite a necessity when the summer temperatures arrive. Today was one such deal the Society took advantage of and so did its members.

‘Millionaires golf’ is often not a term associated too often with Laguna but it was the order on this day. Ideal conditions and only a handful of players on the course – perfect. It was decided to have a x3 ‘man’ team event with two scores to count out of the three, a great format for team bonding, and of course the obligatory Nearest The Pin on the 17th.

A good day had by all with post drinks refreshments once again at Parkies Bar.

Alamos Saturday 28th May – Weekly Competition

The Society last played Alamos on the 16th October and since then the new road has opened linking its entrance to the centre of the resort. Whilst not shorter it certainly is a less dustier affair and doesn’t require a visit to the car wash on the way home! Construction is around all with two hotels scheduled and the ubiquitous villas and apartments. Alamos is so far untouched so go and play and make the most of its wonderful beauty and tranquility because one day sadly it will change.

Player numbers were even so it was decided a betterball pairs stableford would be ideal. The draw just did itself mainly by who arrived with who.The fairways were excellent whilst the greens were somewhat below there usual high standard after undergoing spiking the previous week. A good day had by all with scores to match!

Manuel De Los Santos

Manuel de los Santos is one of sport’s most inspirational figures. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, he played baseball from a young age and by 2003 was planning to turn professional. But a motorcycle accident changed his life forever when he lost his left leg above the knee.

Following this accident, he moved to France and on seeing the film, ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’, he was inspired to take up golf. Now 26 years old, Manuel lives in Paris and plays to a handicap of just three, competing in high profile tournaments all around the world. His extraordinary golf swing has become instantly recognisable.

Peter Montgomery read about Manuel at the end of 2009 and had the idea of making a film about him. This short documentary portrait is the result.
