Morgado Golf Course

Morgado golf course, home of the new Portuguese Open Championship, part of the Europeen Tour is a stunning par 73 golf course located on the foots of Algarve Monchique mountains, just a short drive from the seaside town of Portimão and the fishing village of Alvor. When you play at Morgado golf course be prepared to experience two different nine holes – one slightly flatter and the other undulating, displaying impressive views across the Monchique mountains. Morgado golf course is a walkable course, if you've got the stamina, but when the weather warms up you'll want to enjoy the comfort of a buggy, in fact, accesses to the fairways are extremely well displayed. The back 9 is slightly more challenging because of the aforementioned undulating features but also because the valley is mountain-sided, creating a kind of funnel for the wind to blow through.Morgado golf course is not a long golf course, however, all the Par 3 are quite long ones, especially on the front 9 where you will find 2 golf holes with nearly 200 meters each. To compensate, the Par 4 are relatively short golf holes allowing an average golfer to hit the green in regulation. Strategically, we advise you to build a good result on the front 9 and use it as a warm up for your back nine. The 18th at Morgado golf course is a superb finishing hole, with an elevated tee looking down at the beautiful view of the wavy fairway, sheltered by bunkers, and Clubhouse in the distance. A true signature hole and a great way to end your golf round. By par or by birdie, you are sure to want to come back! A round on this championship course is also a great chance to appreciate the surrounding nature of that side of the Algarve.

Morgado golf course is celebrating its 20th anniversary

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Morgado Golf Course in Portimão. Since its opening on February 3, 2003, the Morgado Golf Course has become a popular golf holiday destination for golfers of all skill levels. It presents an interesting test for novices just learning the game as well as seasoned pros wishing to improve their skills.

The Morgado golf course is located in a valley in the interior of the Algarve, surrounded by natural beauty, and contains 18 holes with a PAR of 73.

Golfers might expect to see features typical of a links course, such as flat fairways and bunkers reminiscent of those in Scotland, but will be surprised to learn that this golf course is actually located in a parkland rather than by the ocean.

Director Jorge Papa of Morgado Golf Course reflects on the past two decades: "20 years have gone since the day when, at the entrance to the Clubhouse, we displayed the 'Open' notice on a basic A4 sheet. With no fanfare, this is how we announced Morgado's launch. The golf course could be accessed through a dirt road that cut through the estate, and its "tender" condition had led to high expectations for the amount of work it would require to join the ranks of the good national golf courses".

"There has been a lot of change since then. We've played home to three different Portuguese Opens, as well as several more professional and amateur tournaments of note. Congratulations are due not just to the golf course itself, but to the entire team", Jorge Papa said.

The historic Portuguese Open has been held at the Morgado Golf Course for three consecutive years (2017, 2018, and 2019), along with numerous other PGA Portugal and Portugal Pro Golf Tour events. It has also played home to various social events and several tournaments at the amateur level of the Portuguese Golf Federation (National Absolute Championship and National Club Championship).

The Morgado Golf Resort consists of not only Morgado and Álamos golf courses, but also the Clubhouse (restaurant and bar), Pro-shop (golf shop), Golf Academy, and an accommodation unit (NAU Morgado Golf & Country Club), all of which have earned it international recognition in recent years, including a ranking of seventh in the 'Best Value Golf Resorts in Continental Europe' category in 2021 and a place in the top 100 of 'Best Golf Resorts in Continental Europe'.

Morgado Golf Course - latest comments and reviews

I guess July is low season , it was like we had the course to ourselves, we did not see another golfer until the 16th , wish it was like this all year around .

News - Hot weather 2021-07-16
With high temperatures in the Algarve, Morgado's fairways reach temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius, but the course remains in excellent playing conditions, as a result of the improved work of the maintenance team. Players are advised to choose to play early in the morning.

Beautiful setting & course with lovely wide fairways....ideal for the not so skilled golfer! Greens were like carpet. Clubhouse Okay & food was tasty. However, a long winding driveway made for a depressing first impression as there were many large drab unfinished, run down apartments on the approach. Many of these could also be seen as you made your way around the golf course. Having a meal afterwards overlooking the course your eye is yet again taken with a very sad looking incomplete structure.....pity. I would still recommend the course itself as it is very well maintained.

Greens are good, tee boxes could do with some work. Over all a good experience, food and club house was good. Challenging course if the wind is blowing

We had three really enjoyable rounds at Morgado. The course was in good condition, especially the greens which were true. The tee boxes were rather worn, though. My only other criticism is that there needs to be a course marshal out more regularly. We were behind an incredibly slow four ball who held us up on every hole and yet did not let us through.

Very good

Morgado back to it's best, lush fairways and perfect greens.

A very nice maintained course with good facilities and would play it again.

Course in good condition

Cathy Proto 2024-05-13
Enjoyed the well-maintained course: nice variation in the holes, a hilly back nine so a buggy is useful.

Brian Trenbirth 2024-05-13
Course in excellent condition but slightly marred by a very slow round.

Ray Knowles 2024-05-12
