Welcome is first class. Bag drop, valet parking, escorted to excellent range, 1st tee etc. Continues after the round… clubs cleaned, put in car - you get the idea. Course is varied and challenging - lots of bunkers, water and at this time of year the rough is punishing (hard to find balls). Greens immaculate and roll great. Fairways a bit scruffy in places (still recovering from summer drought?) Expensive but you have to do it once ????

Monte Rei is one of the best courses in Europe if you ask me. It has it all... full service (car gets parked and clubs/bags are placed on your buggies), nice shop, friendly people. Drivingrange is perfect, hit from grass with quality balls and try your skills from the bunker and the practice green. Once it is time the starter comes to pick you up to guide you to the first tee, explains some stuff, offers some fruit and off you go. The course is great. Every hole is on itself. The bunkers and water look impressive. The back 9 of the course is even more impressive than the front 9. Due to a very hot summer that damaged the grass the fairways weren't in that perfect condition as it used to be but still a thrill playing here. Once you finish your round you get a complimentary bag tag, your clubs get cleaned and bag are placed in your car again. It comes with a price, but when I go to the Algarve I can't skip playing this gem!

It;’s a beautiful layout although rather remote. The overall condition of the course wasn’t great and was not to the standard you expect of Monte Rei. Some of the margins were also untidy and the greens were considerably slower than the practice putting green. The round was very slow and not a single marshall seen.

Great layout, great professional service and a few brilliant marketing moves - effective in increasing customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, the course had water allocation problems this year and a bush fire two years ago, so the views are affected and the fairways are pretty burned. Due to heat, most of the water was used on the greens to save them but they are soft and slower than normal (think 8-9 not 12). Golf is subject to mother nature and the staff has done their best with top notch service and course maintenance to overcome the damage. Congratulations on well run course - top notch.

Wasn’t quite so impressed with some levels of customer service, the dress code for the vistra restaurant was confusing and the staff in one restaurant made things difficult. The red tees are not very exciting and it would be nice if ladies could tee off from the silver tee as well. This is possible, of course The clubhouse restaurant ''The Grill'' could do with a facelift. Especially at this time of year when you are inside, it is not really cosy.

Monte Rei experience has gone downhill in my opinion. I prob wouldn’t go back as value for money isn’t there I found after this visit. Our last visit was a much better experience. The pro shop wasn’t stocked with the latest golf apparel. The greens weren’t as good and the box of goodies(tees, pencils, stroke savers) was empty on the first tee. This really annoyed me as this is meant to be the best course in Portugal. Overall I was disappointed.

This is a very good, very challenging golf course. Water comes into play on several holes. If the wind is blowing be prepared and bring a few extra sleeves of balls! There was a terrible wildfire last August, and you can see many of the charred trees and bushes, however many of the trees managed to survive. The fairways were a bit sparse however the greens were in good shape. Nice practice range and the folks who work here are very helpful and friendly.

Clubhouse: Large and very modern, exceptionally clean and tidy with all the facilities you could need. Prompt, helpful and very polite service. Golf staff: Immediate friendly attention on arrival taking care of golf equipment and explaining protocols. Good explanation of golf facilities and layout. Clubs cleaned after play. Practice area: More than adequate driving range, chipping and putting green. Good quality range balls included in green fee for 1 hour prior to tee time. Golf course: Outstanding setting and layout as with most ‘Nicklaus’ courses , not easy but very fair, reasonable spacing of ‘tee times’ (10 mins) avoiding the impatient record time breaking players (never mind your score - how long did it take?). Greens at date of play not fully recovered from springtime maintenance although very playable. General: Not the easiest course to get to but well worth the effort. Would play it everyday if I could.

Leider ist der Kurs nicht in den Zustand wie vor zwei Jahren. In den Bunkern wenig Sand , Bunkerkanten nicht sehr gepflegt. 170€ ist er in diesem Zustand nicht wert. Da sind die Quinta do lago Plätze sehr viel besser gepflegt. Unfortunately, the course is not in the condition it was two years ago. Little sand in the bunkers, bunker edges not well maintained. It's not worth €170 in this condition. The Quinta do lago courses are much better maintained.

What can be said of this premier establishment...service is the key to selling golf here. The course is true challenge with some unique holes from the great Jack Niclaus. Valet parking, shown around clubhouse, given a souvenir key ring, taken to the range, chipping and putting green, collected by the starter. Given yardage book, card pencils, water, etc. Buggy set up to yards, of we go. Always someone checking on you, food, etc. Cold towel lovely touch on back nine. Best bit is being presented with an engraved bag tag as you walk of the last green. It’s the attention to detail that makes the difference!

By far the best gold course in the Algarve I love it. The whole experience staff are very courteous, the food is good too. Would love to see more offers from them as Monte is very expensive. Perhaps a bigger discount if you play it twice or something? I love the early ticket before 9.30am where you get Tapas included. This is very good indeed.

This week, with the start of the Ryder Cup 2012, we were that much more inspired and so we played on the Sunday to be able to go back and watch the singles competition. We played at Salgados Golf Course, just north of Albufeira, set in a beautiful nature reserve by the sea. An ensemble of 15 players gathered under the beautiful Algarve skyes, the perfect conditions to golf in. As you may know, Salgados golf course is rather tricky when the coastal winds pick up. The course was in great shape with impecable fairways and greens - the rough, which was quite deep and punished at times a wayward shot. We played in the morning and the course was rather quiet, which allowed us to get around in a reasonable time. A great sightseeing course, populated by a vast number of migratory bird species that often come to watch you play.
