Golf Competition

Scotland golf competitions - The Championship Ailsa Course

The Championship Ailsa Course Turnberry, Glasgow

The Championship Ailsa Course was originally designed by 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie, opening in 1906 alongside the railway line that first brought golfers to Turnberry. Requisitioned as an RAF airfield in both World Wars, the course was almost entirely rebuilt by Philip Mackenzie Ross after the second, reopening in 1951 as the links played today. The Ailsa has hosted the Open Championship four times: 1977's legendary ''Duel in the Sun'' between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, 1986, 1994, and a dramatic 2009 finish in which a 59-year-old Watson narrowly missed a sixth Claret Jug. Since 2014, Martin Ebert has led a major restoration, creating five entirely new coastal holes, most notably the par-3 9th, played across the bay to a green by the lighthouse and now regarded as one of golf's most iconic short holes, with further refinements to the 7th and 8th completed in 2024–25. Book your round at one of the world's great championship links, a genuine bucket-list test for any serious golfer. (...)

Scotland golf competitions - The King Robert the Bruce Course

The King Robert the Bruce Course Turnberry, Glasgow

The King Robert the Bruce Course traces its roots to the original Arran course, laid out in 1909 and twice flattened for use as an RAF airfield during the World Wars, wartime runway sections still visible on the course today. Rebuilt and renamed Kintyre around 2000, it was fully redesigned by Martin Ebert and reopened in June 2017 under its current name, honouring Robert the Bruce, believed to have been born at Turnberry Castle on the site where the resort's famous lighthouse now stands. The links measures around 7,203 yards, par 72, with Ebert's redesign reversing the direction of the coastal holes to maximise views of the lighthouse, Ailsa Craig and the Firth of Clyde. The clifftop 9th green above ''Kintyre's Cove'' is the standout on the front nine, while the closing par-5 18th plays past a dozen fairway bunkers to a green set below the clubhouse windows. Often overshadowed by its illustrious sibling, the Ailsa, it stands on its own as a genuinely fine modern links. Book your round at Turnberry's other links, wartime history, royal namesake and all. (...)
