Address for The Championship Ailsa Course Turnberry Golf Links, 16 Maidens Rd, Turnberry, Girvan KA26 9LS, Escócia
The Championship Ailsa Course was originally designed by 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie, opening in 1906 alongside the railway line that first brought golfers to Turnberry. Requisitioned as an RAF airfield in both World Wars, the course was almost entirely rebuilt by Philip Mackenzie Ross after the second, reopening in 1951 as the links played today.

The Ailsa has hosted the Open Championship four times: 1977's legendary ''Duel in the Sun'' between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, 1986, 1994, and a dramatic 2009 finish in which a 59-year-old Watson narrowly missed a sixth Claret Jug. Since 2014, Martin Ebert has led a major restoration, creating five entirely new coastal holes, most notably the par-3 9th, played across the bay to a green by the lighthouse and now regarded as one of golf's most iconic short holes, with further refinements to the 7th and 8th completed in 2024–25.
