Did you know that on North of the Algarve, Praia Del Rey Golf & Beach Resort in Óbidos is the golf course which receives more golf players in Portugal ? According to data of the CNIG, Praia Del Rey golf Course had 38,000 rounds of golf in 2016. In the last 10 years has never been below the 35,000 golf rounds and has already surpassed some times the 40,000 golf rounds, and the large majority of golf players are from north european countrys including , Uk and Ireland.
The 18 holes of the nearby West Cliffs Golf Links and clubhouse are scheduled to open in June. Offering a prime location and exclusivity , the golf course will be in the heart of a new 200-acre resort, West Cliffs Resort, adjacent to a stretch of 2.5 kilometres of Golden Cliffs and Atlantic coast, with five-star hotel and villas, but with a density of construction of one third compared to that of Praia Del Rey golf resort .
West Cliffs golf course, been design in a manner that , players will have the previlege of , overlooking the sea in all golf holes, with the signature of Cynthia Dye, niece of one of the sacred monsters of design of golf courses, the American Pete Dye. It is the first track "Dye" in Portugal and only the fourth in Europe, came to strengthen the golf cluster in this part of the coast with four golf courses (Royal Guardian Bom Sucesso, Óbidos , Praia Del Rey and now West Cliffs) five minutes of distance between them.
The design process required a careful study and long-term local conditions, features and restrictions. The project evolved through many reviews and comprehensive reviews with the local authorities and to national ministries, in order to ensure minimal disruption to the environment and to create a harmonious and sustainable link in an enviable location, protecting areas of existing drainage basins, fossils of dinosaurs and pine sheet.
"Our vision was to build a golf course that fits perfectly into the natural environment and that offers a truly wonderful golfing experience," explains Francisco Cadet, Director of Praia Del Rey golf Course and West Cliffs. "So, we haven´t touch in almost anything. We kept the dunes and vegetation – we have also some holes with vegetation in the middle of the fairway, "he adds.
Goes further and really believes that the original nature of the area turned out to be reinforced, because before the pine and eucalyptus this was a coastal zone of undergrowth, and in pickling of the land for the golf course was made to collect native seeds, which were placed on the ground in the final arrangements, ending up with all that were Acacias and whiners , which are weeds.
Cynthia Dye corroborates it. She never imagined until a year and a half, that the project ever move forward: "With the Atlantic visible from every hole, West Cliffs is the most natural field imaginable. One of its most impressive features is the how to your native environment is anchored. The terrain is amazing. In the large majority of the holes, it was only necessary to situate the greens with some shaping and then set the limits of grassing. Basically, the golf course was already there waiting for us. "
With five tees on each golf hole, Fescue grass in the fairways and , agrostis on the greens West Cliffs golf course will be a par-72 with a maximum of 6382 metres (from black tees ), so it's not a long golf course. "It's exciting and dramatic, but at the same time has been designed in such a way that it can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. In one of the most spectacular golf course in Europe, will be a lot of fun to play and I can't wait to see the reactions of golfers when they get here and see what we have created, "says the director.
As a golfer, Francisco Cadet believes that West Cliffs golf course will be easier than Praia Del Rey, because as soon as you get to the fairway, there will be no great difficulty – players will have relatively short shots to the greens. These are bigger than your neighbor's brother, more wide, wavy but not dramatic. And whatever the prevailing winds, the holes are for or against, it is rare to have cross-cutting winds.
In terms of water obstacles, there are three large lakes, one along the right side of the hole 3; another on the 9th short par 4, with dog-leg, in which longer players can risk going for the green over water; and a third on the 18th.
For Cynthia, "the most distinctive architectural trait of the golf course is the collection of bunkers with irregular perimeters mixed and dictated by native vegetation. It will be a very dramatic experience for players. "
Physical requirement? "It's not hard to do on foot, but we estimate that nearly half of the players will use buggies, against 25% in Praia Del Rey. The more complicated are the links between the 15 and 17, which are somewhat uneven, "explains the director.
West Cliffs golf course started to be promoted in November last year only on the operators and at the moment is already being released to the public. "We started to appear in English, German, Swedish magazines," explains, the Golf Director , adding, "because we are selling this new golf course we see an increase in sales, we're way above last year, because there are no other new golf courses and this is a new product, which broadcasts to be exceptional , with an out-of-series framework."
The clubhouse was designed by the renowned architectural offices Your Kay (General) and Blue Office (interior design) and the architectural concept is based on the relationship with nature. Taking advantage of the natural light and increasing the panoramic sea environment,
the building is covered with large glazed surfaces. Balconies and terraces are made with natural materials, like wood, translating into high levels of quality, comfort and an eco-friendly environment.
The clubhouse has two floors, including all services related to the golf course, the articles and areas of social activities, which includes a large bar with panoramic views over the golf course, sitting areas and the à la carte restaurant.
