Pebble Beach Golf Links was designed by two amateur golfers with no prior course-design experience, Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, and opened on 22 February 1919. Neville's brief was simple: get as many holes as possible along the bay. What resulted is arguably the finest public golf course in the world, and one of the very few courses of its stature that remains genuinely open to any golfer, not just members.

The course has evolved carefully since: Herbert Fowler lengthened the 18th into today's dramatic 555-yard closing par-5 along the water in 1922, Alister MacKenzie added bunkering to the 8th and 13th in 1926, and Jack Nicklaus redesigned the clifftop par-3 5th ahead of the 2000 U.S. Open. It has hosted more USGA championships than any other venue in history, including six U.S. Opens, and has been the permanent home of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am since 1947.
