Del Monte Golf Course was designed by Charles E. Maud and opened on 1 May 1897 as a nine-hole course for the Hotel Del Monte, later expanded to 18 holes by 1903 with further design work by Herbert Fowler. It's the oldest golf course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River.
Its history runs deeper still: the Del Monte Championship, first played in 1898, was once considered the unofficial state title, and Del Monte hosted the founding of the California State Amateur in 1912. In 1919, a ''second course'' was added on the property; it was later renamed Pebble Beach Golf Links, meaning Del Monte is where Pebble Beach itself began. Unlike its coastal siblings, Del Monte plays inland, its narrow, tree-lined fairways framed by mature oak, pine and cypress, with small, multi-tiered greens and staggered bunkering that reward precision over power.
