Tecina Golf Course was laid out in 2003 by Martin Ebert of the Donald Steel design firm, on a cliff-top site above the Hotel Jardín Tecina, the only golf course on La Gomera. Owned by the Fred Olsen shipping company, it has hosted the Fred Olsen Challenge de España on the European Challenge Tour and the AESGOLF International Senior Ladies' Championships. The round begins at the highest point of the course and runs downhill for the rest of the way, dropping more than 500 feet from the 1st tee to the 18th green through a former banana plantation now thick with native cactus, tabaiba shrubs and fruiting trees. The par-3 4th demands a carry over the Tapahuga ravine, but the 10th is the hole players remember: a tee set 45 metres above a green split by a ravine, the fairway seeming to hang in the air above the cliff. The Atlantic and Mount Teide stay in view from almost every hole. Facilities include a driving range, chipping green with bunker, and putting green, all overlooking the sea. Reach Tecina by ferry from Tenerife or by air to La Gomera's own airport, and book a round that stands apart from anything else in the Canary Islands. (...)
