La Serena sits close to the Mar Menor in Los Alcázares, its fairways winding around the Torre del Rame, a watchtower that has stood guard over these waters for five centuries. Manuel Piñero, the former Ryder Cup player, designed the course, which opened in 2006 on largely flat ground where the sea breeze off the Mar Menor does most of the defending.

Water is the course's defining feature, coming into play on sixteen of the eighteen holes and demanding real precision from the first tee onward. The par-3 3rd is the sternest test, asking for a 170-metre carry over water to reach the green directly, while the par-5 11th stretches out to around 500 metres for the longest hole on the card. It's a course that rewards a golfer who plots a route around the hazards rather than simply attacking them, with the historic watchtower a constant, striking presence throughout the round.
