Portugal golf holidays - Batalha Golf Club

Batalha Golf Club Ponta Delgada, Azores

Batalha golf course where the green of the land meets the blue of the ocean, a historic landscape awaits you. This course, designed by Cameron Powell in 1986, offers 27 holes of golf laid out over 120 há, with its magnificent setting, nestling on the skirts of the surrounding hills and with sweeping views to the ocean – has large flowing greens, wide and generous fairways and sinuously contoured bunkers. It is difficult to select a best hole – they are all in some ways exceptional – but there is a very special sensation to be felt when standing on the soaring 6th Tee of the B loop. The facility opened to the public in 1993 and its sumptuous clubhouse offers a unique setting for weddings and other banqueting events. Batalha Golf Course is situated on the north coast of São Miguel island, just 10 minutes from the centre of the capital Ponta Delgada. (...)

Portugal golf holidays - Furnas Golf Course

Furnas Golf Course São Miguel, Azores

Furnas sits near the volcanic lakes and grottoes that give São Miguel its nickname, the Green Island. The original nine holes opened in 1936, designed by the Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross, the first course built anywhere in the Azores. Cameron Powell later extended it to a full 18, matching Mackenzie Ross's style so closely that today it's genuinely hard to tell which nine came first.
Cryptomeria trees separate the fairways throughout, giving the course a distinctly Scottish feel rare anywhere in Portugal. Nearly every fairway is undulating, calling for a full range of shots from tee to green, and the greens themselves are excellent, full of subtle borrows that reward local knowledge over raw power. Water comes into play along several fairways, adding another layer of decision-making to an already thoughtful layout.
For golfers who appreciate proper design pedigree over flashy extras, this is the round to book on São Miguel. The clubhouse, driving range and resident professionals round out a genuinely traditional golfing day, set in one of the most naturally striking parts of the island. If you're chasing a taste of classic, links-influenced golf without leaving the Azores, Furnas is the one. (...)
