Batalha sits on the north coast of São Miguel, on ground where 19th-century Portuguese armies once fought for control of the island. Built in 1986 by the architects Bob Cameron and Chris Powell, the course opened to the public in 1993 as a full 27 holes across three loops, A, B and C, each pairing giving a different full round.
The volcanic ground shapes everything here. Manicured fairways and large, undulating greens sit against dry, rocky outcrops and native woodland, a contrast that gives the course real visual bite. The 4th on the C loop is the signature hole, and the tee shot from B6 is one of the most talked-about moments on the course, a soaring, panoramic view worth the walk up alone. Wide, generous fairways make this a genuinely playable course for a range of abilities, while still testing the better player through its length and green complexes. The course has hosted PGA EuroPro Tour events and the Azores Open, real tournament pedigree behind the scenery.
With three loops to mix and match, Batalha rewards more than one visit, and each combination plays like a genuinely different round. Book more than one combination if your trip allows it. For golfers heading to São Miguel, this is one of the essential rounds on the island.

Terceira Island's only golf course has a genuinely unusual history. It began as recreation ground for American servicemen stationed at nearby Lajes Air Base, later developed and taken over by the Terceira Golf Club to become the 18-hole course played today, opened in 1954. It remains one of the more distinctive stories in Portuguese golf, a course born out of a military airbase and shaped into a proper test over the decades since.
Fairways run between stands of cryptomeria, giving the course real definition and shade from hole to hole. The par-4 5th, at 370 yards, is generally reckoned the toughest test on the course, demanding accuracy off the tee to set up the approach. It's a well-established club with a genuinely active local membership, one of the more significant golfing communities in Portugal, and the pro shop is worth a stop for its range and pricing.
Just 13km from Angra do Heroísmo and 10km from the airport, this is an easy, convenient round to fold into any Azores itinerary. For golfers wanting a genuinely different piece of Portuguese golf history, Terceira delivers it.

Furnas sits near the volcanic lakes and grottoes that give São Miguel its nickname, the Green Island. The original nine holes opened in 1936, designed by the Scottish architect Philip Mackenzie Ross, the first course built anywhere in the Azores. Cameron Powell later extended it to a full 18, matching Mackenzie Ross's style so closely that today it's genuinely hard to tell which nine came first.
Cryptomeria trees separate the fairways throughout, giving the course a distinctly Scottish feel rare anywhere in Portugal. Nearly every fairway is undulating, calling for a full range of shots from tee to green, and the greens themselves are excellent, full of subtle borrows that reward local knowledge over raw power. Water comes into play along several fairways, adding another layer of decision-making to an already thoughtful layout.
For golfers who appreciate proper design pedigree over flashy extras, this is the round to book on São Miguel. The clubhouse, driving range and resident professionals round out a genuinely traditional golfing day, set in one of the most naturally striking parts of the island. If you're chasing a taste of classic, links-influenced golf without leaving the Azores, Furnas is the one.
